RYDE REGATTA. SATURDAY, 19th MAY, 2012.
SHANKLIN REGATTA. SUNDAY, 20th MAY, 2012.
In spite of concerns regarding the weather during the week leading up to Ryde
Rowing Clubs Annual Championship Regatta on Saturday (19th May) conditions on
the day allowed the club to complete a packed program of eighteen races, on
time, on the day, with more than one hundred crews taking part from twelve clubs
– the three Island clubs – and nine from the mainland.
Around five hundred, athletes, coaches, officials and spectators are believed to
have attended the Regatta, held of Appley Beach, near the Wightlink sponsored
Clubs Appley Park Clubhouse and with many of them staying over the weekend so
they could compete at Shanklin Regatta on the Sunday, this will have provided a
useful early season boost for local hotels, guest houses and restaurants.
The home Club were able to repeat much of the previous weeks success at
Bournemouth Regatta with wins for their Men’s Senior Four of Sam Cocker, Tom
Clark, Matt Allsopp, Ian Hayden and cox Ed Newnham, the Men’s Junior Senior
Harvey Kirkby, Charlie and Joe Norman and Charlie Gedling, with Max Reeve coxing
and the Men’s Veteran Four of Simon Saunders, Mick Jenner, Nick Pike and Russell
Page, with Bryony Reeve coxing. A further victory came in the Men’s Junior Pair
where Dale Buckett and Sam Corney were able to improve on their 2nd place at
Bournemouth.
There was improved performances from the young Novice Men’s Crew of Ed Newnham,
Dennis Kurtin, Steven Johnson and Luke Stubbings with Max Reeve coxing and from
the Ladies Novice Crew of Leanne Mitchell, Abbi Cornish, Sophie Brown and
Melissa Carrol with Katie Corney coxing once again. The Men’s Senior Pair of Sam
Cocker and Ben Ade finished in 4th place as did the Ladies Senior Pair of Maddie
Dunn and Dee Lawrence who was making her competitive debut for the Club
following her move to the Island.
A third place for the Men’s Junior Four of Andreas Hicks, Dale Buckett, Sam
Corney and James Cleary with Katie Corney coxing and for Nick Pike in the Men’s
Senior Sculls also clinched the aggregate shield for the best club on the day
for Ryde.
Unfortunately no one from the Clubs’ new main Regatta sponsors Carisbrooke
Shipping was able to attend the prize giving but the Club was delighted to have
the Ryde Town Mayor, David Woodward, in attendance who presented the Trophies
and individual prizes to the winning crews on their behalf.
On the Sunday the Ryde Team travelled the short distance to Shanklin for their
Annual Regatta where unfortunately the conditions had deteriorated making the
racing difficult which had an impact on the results and forcing some crews to
withdraw including all the opposition in the Veterans Race – leaving the
previous days winning Ryde crew with no one to race. So they switched to the
Men’s Senior Four, with Ben Ade, deputizing for Mick Jenner – and showing their
quality with a 2nd place – to beat the Clubs A crew, who suffered in the
conditions. However this was still a successful regatta for the Clubs with a
third win for the Men’s Junior Senior Four and a 2nd win for the Men’s Junior
Pair as well as a winning performance from the Clubs Ladies Junior Pair in their
non-championship event, for Melissa Carroll and Bryony Reeve and further very
encouraging performances for the other crews in the difficult conditions.

Bournemouth Regatta. Saturday, 12th May,
2012.
Ryde Rowing Club represented the Island at the first Hants & Dorset ARA (Amateur
Rowing Association) Championship Regatta of the season, at Bournemouth on
Saturday (12th May) producing a very encouraging team performance.
While experiencing some difficulties which included some injuries and a capsize
the Wightlink sponsored Club returned to the Island with four wins, three of
them coming in Championship events.
Pride of place goes to the Men’s Senior Four of Sam Cocker, Tom Clark, Matt
Allsopp, Ian Hayden and cox Ed Newnham, who in spite of an injury to Tom Clark
before the race which put their participation in doubt, led from the start and
fought of challenges from three other crews to win a very close race.
The Men’s Junior Senior Fours race produced an equally close finish with the
Ryde Crew of Harvey Kirkby, Charlie and Joe Norman and Charlie Gedling, with Max
Reeve in the coxswain’s seat finishing less than a length ahead of the chasing
pack to record Ryde’s second win of the day.
A third win and Championship point came in the Veteran Fours Race, where the
Ryde crew of Simon Saunders, Mick Jenner, Nick Pike and Russell Page, with
Bryony Reeve in the coxswains seat secured a comfortable and not unexpected win.
The fourth win came in the non-championship Ladies Junior Pairs, where in the
surprise result of the day for Ryde, Bryony Reeve and Melissa Carrol won with
comparative ease.
The Men’s Junior Four of Andreas Hicks, Dale Buckett, Sam Corney and Max Reeve
with Katie Corney coxing will be a little disappointed with their 4th place –
although there was a strong performance from Dale Buckett and Sam Corney in the
Men’s Junior Pairs event where they finished 2nd.
The Men’s Novice four of Ed Newnham, Dennis Kurtin, Steven Johnson and Luke
Stubbings with Max Reeve coxing and racing in their first Hants & Dorset Regatta
did well, finishing 5th in their heat, but missing out on a place in the final.
The Ladies Novice Crew of Leanne Mitchell, Abbi Cornish, Sophie Brown and Gemma
Smith with Katie Corney coxing were well in contention at the turn when Gemma
suffered a back problem, which required medical attention and so they were
forced to withdraw.
In the Men’s Senior Sculls – Mick Jenner just missed out on a place in the final
while Matt Allsopp comfortably qualified from his heat, only to be washed down
by a pleasure boat in the final resulting in a capsize and failure to complete
the race.

From Appley Beach, Ryde – starting at 9am.
PRESS RELEASE.
Ryde Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta takes
place next Saturday, the 19th May, which should be the second regatta of the
2012 Hants & Dorset Championship season, with the 3rd – at Shanklin – scheduled
for the following day.
Ryde Regatta has a significantly earlier start time than usual – with the first
race scheduled for around 9.00am – meaning an early start for the mainland Clubs
– something the Island Clubs are very used to!
School exams the following week has also had an impact on entries – which at
ninety-five are down on last year’s record entry. In spite of this the regatta
will require a packed Programme of 18 races to be completed in just over four
and a half hours over an 1820m course from Appley Beach, near to the Ryde R. C.
Headquarters in Appley Park - towards Ryde Pier and return after a buoy turn.
Races are taking place for Senior, Junior/Senior, Junior and Novice men in coxed
fours, Senior and Junior men in coxless pairs, and Senior, Junior and Novice Men
in Single Sculls. For Ladies there is Senior, Junior and Novice coxed fours and
a Ladies Senior and Junior sculling events. There is also a Veteran Fours event,
which can be mixed. It is anticipated that entries will exceed 100 once late
entries are received. The Regatta is scheduled to start at 9:00am with a race
every 10 to 15 minutes and the prize giving by a representative of the Regattas
main Sponsors – Carisbrooke Shipping - will take place at the Clubhouse, in
Appley Park, at around 2.30pm.
In addition to Carisbrooke Shipping as main sponsors the Regatta has received
further support from a number of local businesses - Harwoods, the Isle of Wight
County Press, Secure Scaffolding, the Appley Manor Hotel, Provincial Builders,
Hayden Electrical, DIGS Michael Jenner, SJ Decorating, Classic Image and J. A.
Dempsey. Further support comes from Wightlink, I.W. Ferries - who are the Clubs
main sponsors. The Club is also grateful for the help of Ryde Inshore Rescue who
provide safety cover and St. John Ambulance who provide first aid cover. The
Club also acknowledges the support and cooperation of Ryde Police and the Isle
of Wight County Council as well as the Ryde Town Council.
Ryde, the host Club have a large entry, with nine crews and scullers racing and
following some good results in the pre-season Head races the Club has high hopes
of some wins.
Some very close racing is expected and the general public are most welcome to
view this free event - the best vantage point being from the sea wall by the
Canoe Lake.
Junior Inter-Regionals Regatta. 28th April, 2012
Island Junior oarsman and women faced a
difficult and frustrating day while competing as part of the Wessex Junior Team
at the GB Junior Inter-regionals Regatta on Saturday (28th April), at the
National Water Sports Centre, in Nottingham.
The Championships is contested between the 11 British Rowing Regions, with the
Thames region split into two (Thames Upper and Thames Lower) to make 12 teams in
total. All events are raced over 1500-meters with the heats timed and the
fastest 6 crews going through to the Grande finale with the others into the
Petite Finale. A points system is applied determined by the results to establish
which region are the national champions. The Island Clubs had stepped in to save
the day for the region by providing nearly half of the athletes for the team
after a number of larger mainland clubs in the region withdrew their support.
Without the support of the Island Clubs it is unlikely that a Wessex team would
have competed, which would have almost certainly have led to the Wessex Region
losing its place in this well respected annual national junior competition.
The athletes and support team travelled to Nottingham late on Friday afternoon
with Ryde Rowing Club providing the trailer and minibus to carry five of the
teams boats and equipment – with grateful thanks to Wightlink, who provided them
with travel across the Solent.
.
The team gathered at the National Water Sports Centre at 7.30am on the Saturday
morning – where it was already clear that the strength and direction of the wind
was going to make things very difficult. The first round of racing got underway
on time at 8.00am but the prevailing conditions had a significant impact on the
performance of the crews with waves, whipped up by the wind, on this usually
calm, purpose built course, breaking over the boats and nearly swamping some of
them and making something of a lottery of some of the results.
The Ryde Club provided the J16 Boys Coxless Quad – consisting of Andreas Hicks,
Dale Buckett, Sam Corney and Max Reeve; the boys J15 Coxless Pair, of Harvey
Kirkby and Ed Newnham; the Girls J16 Coxed Four of Abbie Cornish, Leanne
Mitchell, Sophie Brown and Gemma Smith with Katie Corney coxing and the Boys J14
Coxed Quad consisting of – Joel Smith, Jacob Redstone, Dominic Douglas and Joe
Groves with Ed Newnham coxing; Anja Bennett and Emily Ladd of Newport provided
the Girls J16 Double Sculls and one member of the Boys J16 Coxed Four – Tom
Stockley while Shanklin provided another two members of this crew – Alex
Robertson and Robert Kettlety - the fourth coming from Lymington.
During the first round of racing the conditions deteriorated further leading to
the suspension of racing – and eventual abandonment of the Regatta after a delay
of an hour and a half to see if the conditions might improve. Fortunately all
the Island athletes except one were able to get afloat for the first round of
racing, the unfortunate exception being Ryde’s Harvey Kirkby, his partner in the
double, Ed Newnham - having coxed the J14 Boys coxed four.
While the abandonment of the Regatta was very disappointing the Island Clubs
have hopefully helped to ensure that Juniors Oarsman and women from the Island
and the rest of the Wessex Region will continue to have the opportunity to
compete on this national stage for years to come.

Ryde Rowing Club Retain Head Title.
Ryde Rowing Clubs Men’s Senior Four Crew of Ben
Ade, Tom Clark, Matt Allsopp and Ian Hayden, with Ed Newnham coxing retained
their Southampton Coastal Head of the River Race Title on Saturday (21st April).
Racing in the first division they produced a convincing performance, completing
the four and a half mile course on the River Itchen in a time of sixteen minutes
fifty-eight seconds. They were the only crew to complete the course in under
seventeen minutes – winning the Men’s Senior Four section plus the overall
winners pennant.
There were further good performance from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde crews. In
the first division – the Men’s Junior Senior Four of Harvey Kirkby, Sam Corney,
and Joe and Charlie Norman with Katie Corney coxing finished 2nd in their
section, 11th overall, in time of eighteen minutes six seconds and the Men’s
Junior Four of James Cleary, Max Reeve, Dale Buckett and Andreas Hicks with
Bryony Reeve coxing finished 23rd overall and third in their section with a time
of eighteen minutes fifty-eight seconds.
In the 2nd division, the young Novice Ladies Crew of Leanne Mitchell, Sophie
Brown, Abi Cornish and Gemma Smith with Bryony Reeve coxing once again, finished
8th in their section 47th overall.

Junior Inter Regionals. Saturday, 28th April, 2012.
A large team of around sixteen young
athletes from Ryde Rowing Club will head to the National Water sport Centre in
Nottingham next weekend (28th/29th April) as part of the Wessex Team for the
Junior Inter-regional Championships Regatta.
The Championships is contested between the 11 British Rowing Regions, with the
Thames region split into two (Thames Upper and Thames Lower) to make 12 teams in
total. All events will be raced over 1500-meters with the heats timed. The
fastest 6 crews will go through to the Grande finale with the others into the
Petite Finale. A points system is applied determined by the results to establish
which region are the national champions.
This year’s selection process for the Wessex Team, which covers Hampshire,
Dorset and the Isle of Wight has been compromised by the lack of support from a
number of the larger mainland clubs in the region and the unavailability of the
usual management team. The position at one point was so critical that the region
seriously considered withdrawing, which would have almost certainly have led to
the Wessex Region losing its place in this well respected annual national junior
competition.
The response from the three Island Rowing Clubs – Ryde, Newport and Shanklin -
in making their Junior athletes available alongside coaches, team management
support and equipment – has probably saved the day. The help and support of
Wightlink, who will provide transport across the Solent for the boat trailer is
also acknowledged and makes a big difference to the cost for the Clubs involved.
The Ryde Club is expected to provide the J16 Boys Coxless Quad, the boys J15
Coxless Pair, the Girls J16 Coxed Four and the Boys J14 Coxed Quad – by far the
largest group that the Club has had selected for a regional team. Newport are
expected to provide a Girls J16 Double Sculls and one member of the Boys J16
Coxed Four with Shanklin providing another two members of this crew - the fourth
coming from Lymington.
While not every place in the team will be filled, which will have an impact on
the result, a team will compete – hopefully ensuring that this opportunity will
continue to exist for the regions juniors to compete on this national stage for
years to come.

Head of the Stour, Christchurch. Sunday, 25th
March, 2012
A large team from Ryde
Rowing Club consisting of over thirty athletes with ages ranging from thirteen
to over fifty competed in the Head of the Stour at Christchurch on Sunday (25th
March).
The Head of Stour is a processional race over a 3000m course, raced over two
divisions for men and women in a range of age groups, statuses and boat types,
both River and Coastal. This led to Ryde taking a very full trailer and a second
minibus being required to get everyone and all the equipment to Christchurch -
and the Club acknowledges the support of Wightlink in achieving this.
It was also a successful trip for the Club with a number of wins in their
respective sections and some encouraging results from the other crews and
scullers.
The River Men’s Open Coxless Quad of Russell Page, Ben Ade, Matt Allsopp and Ian
Hayden racing in the first division won their section comfortably – and achieved
the second fastest time of the day – just one second down on the winning
Bournemouth University Eight. In the same division Sam Cocker and Tom Clark
racing in the Men’s Coastal Senior Pair finished 2nd in their section, a feat
equaled by the Men’s Coastal Junior pair of Dale Buckett and Sam Corney and
Men’s Senior Coastal Sculler, Mick Jenner. Also racing in the first division was
a Women’s Coastal Novice Four of Melissa Carroll, Sophie Brown, Leanne Mitchell
and Gemma Smith, with Katie Corny coxing who will be a little disappointed with
their 6th place and a River Women’s Open Double of Bryony Reeve and Abbie
Cornish who finished 3rd.
In the 2nd Division there were two more wins for the Club –the Coastal Junior
Senior Crew of Harvey Kirkby, Joe and Charlie Norman and Charlie Gedling with
Katie Corney coxing winning their section and Matt Allsopp and Ian Hayden
winning the River Men’s Open Double with Sam Cocker and Tom Clark finishing in
2nd place. The Clubs Coastal Junior Crew of Sam Corney, Dale Buckett, Andreas
Hicks and Max Reeve with Abbie Cornish coxing finished 3rd in their section.
Micky Jenner and Russell Page, racing in the Veteran sculls event came in 2nd
and 3rd respectively while Ben Ade finished 2nd in the Men’s River Open Sculls
event.
A young Coastal Men’s Novice four – of Jono Bate, Luke Stubbings and Ed Newnham
– who were all racing for the first time – with Christian Lacey making up the
crew and Graham Reeve Coxing had an encouraging row for a first race.
Finally the Clubs J13 Boys development squad of Joe Groves, Matthew Jeacock,
Steven Soul, Joel Smith, Jacob Redstone and Sebastian Crouch – with Joe Monger
from Shanklin, raced twice, once in each division – with Steven Soul doubling-up
and Max and Bryony Reeve coxing and produced good performances for the youngest
crews on the river that day.

Southampton Eights and Small
Boats HORR.
Sunday, 11th March, 2012.
Holidays and work commitments led to a depleted
Ryde Rowing Club Team competed at the Southampton Eights and Small Boats Head of
the River Race on Sunday (11th March). The race was a time trial in two
divisions over a long four mile course on the River Itchen in Southampton.
The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club only had one of their Senior/Masters squad
available – Nick Pike – but he did not disappoint – racing in the Men's Veteran
Single in the first division and in the Men's Open Single Sculls in the second
division and winning both.
The clubs J16 Crew of – Sam Corney, Andreas Hicks, Dale Buckett and Max Reeve –
with Katie Corney coxing raced in a River Coxed Four in the Men’s Intermediate 3
category, finishing 4th in a strongly contested category.
The Clubs young Junior Senior Crew split into two doubles – to race in the Men’s
Open Double Sculls event – racing above their status against Senior Oarsman –
with Charlie Gedling and Joe Norman finishing in 4th place and Harvey Kirkby and
Charlie Norman finishing just behind them in 6th place.

Burway Head,
Saturday, 18th February, 2012.
Ryde Rowing Club competed in their 2nd “warm-up” event of the season on Saturday
(18th February) at the Burway Head of the River Race and there were some further
encouraging results for the Wightlink sponsored Club. The race was a time trial
with three divisions over a 3000m course staged on the River Thames near
Staines, with the Club competing in the 2nd and 3rd divisions.
Ryde Club crews recorded the fastest times in their status in a number of
sections including the Boys Junior 15 double scull of Jo Norman and Harvey
Kirkby, the Girls J16 Coxed Quad Scull of Gemma Smith, Sophie Brown, Melissa
Carroll and Abbie Cornish with Ed Newnham coxing and the same crew, but with
Bryony Reeve instead of Sophie Brown in the Womens Coxless Quad.
The Boys J16 Coxed Quad of Max Reeve, Andreas Hicks, Sam Corney and Dale Buckett,
with Ed Newnham coxing were also the fastest in their section – and then raced
again in a J16 coxless quad finishing with the 2nd fastest time.
The Clubs young J13 Boys Coxed Quad crew of Joe Groves, Dominic Douglas, Jacob
Redstone, Joel Smith with Bryony Reeve coxing also had the 2nd best time in
their section – which a good result from a crew racing for only the 2nd time and
over their longest course to date.

Thames Valley Trial
Head.Sunday, 29th January, 2012.
There were some encouraging results for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing
Club crews and scullers when they competed at their first event of the year
- The Thames Valley Trial Head - last Sunday (29th January).
Staged at the 2012 London Olympic Rowing Regatta venue at Dorney Lake, near
Windsor the event is a time trial over 2000 meters, held in three divisions
where the equal conditions allow comparisons between divisions to be made.
Ryde took a strong team of over twenty athletes who raced in two of the
three divisions in a variety of boat types and categories, with some of the
team members competing for the club for the first time.
Racing in the 2nd division Ryde Masters Single Scullers acquitted themselves
well with Ben Ade recording the best time of the day in the Masters “B”
Category and both Nick Pike, racing at Masters “D” and Allan Evans racing at
Masters “F” recording the 2nd best times of the day in their respective
categories. Ben Ade and Nick Pike then competed in Division 3 in a Masters
“B” double which was again the fastest on the day in this category.
The Clubs Junior Senior Crew of Charlie Gedling, Joe and Charlie Norman and
Harvey Kirby competed in Double Sculls in the 2nd Division – with Charlie
Gedling and Joe Norman competing in the J17 event where another 2nd best
time was achieved – and Harvey Kirkby and Charlie Norman competing at J15 –
where they finished with the 4th best time in a strong field. In the 3rd
Division the two doubles competed as a Coastal Coxed Four – with Ed Newnham
joining them as coxswain – where they finished 2nd to a Senior Crew.
In the 2nd division Ed Newnham coxed the Coastal Junior crew of Sam Corney,
Dale Buckett, Andreas Hicks and Max Reeve in a Coastal Junior four – and
they recorded the fastest time of the day in this category – before
competing again in Division 3 in a coxless quad – finishing with the 4th
best time in their category – behind three strong school crews.
The Club had six girls competing, two – Melissa Carroll and Abbie Cornish -
for the first time in Ryde colors. The Club raced two combinations of
Coastal Novice four, one in division two – consisting of Sophie Brown, Gemma
Smith, Abbie Cornish and Leanne Mitchell – with Melissa replacing Gemma for
the 3rd division – with both crews coxed by Katie Corney. The two crews
recorded the 4th and 8th best times respectively in this category – in one
of the largest fields of the day. In division two Bryony Reeve and Melissa
Competed in a J18 women’s double – but were forced to use a Coastal boat,
through lack of equipment which had a significant impact on their time. In
the third division Gemma Smith replaced Melissa – and a river double was
available so a much improved time was recorded.
Finally, the Club boated a J13 Coxed Quad – one of the youngest crews the
club has ever put afloat – and all except Coach/Cox Graham Reeve were in
their first ever competitive race. This very young crew of Dominic Douglas,
Joe Groves, Jacob Redstone and Joel Smith, who were expected to be well
beaten by the more experienced school crews, sculled exceptionally well to
finish with the 6th best time in their category.

The Committee of Ryde
Rowing Club are very pleased to announce that
WIGHTLINK
have agreed to continue their
sponsorship of the Club for the 2012 Season.
We are
WIGHTLINK
’s oldest and longest running sports sponsorship - and I am sure our members
- and in particular the active members - appreciate how important it is to
us.
They provide the Club with considerable assistance in transporting the
competitors, coaches and equipment to and from the Island for mainland
competition throughout the year. Their support allows the Club to compete on
the mainland on a regular basis in the Hants & Dorset ARA Coastal Regatta
programme during the summer months and inland in River events during the
winter. Their support has been especially useful to the Clubs successful and
expanding Junior Section enabling them to attend competitions and training
camps on the mainland. Without Wightlink’s support all these activities
would be substantially restricted.
Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries are the leading ferry operator across the
Solent offering the greatest choice of routes with a fleet of eight car and
passenger ferries and four high-speed foot passenger catamarans. Each year
Wightlink carries in excess of 5.6 million passengers and 1.2 million
vehicles across the Solent on its three routes, with more 72,000 sailings
annually - up to 230 a day in peak periods. Wightlink’s sponsorship of the
Ryde Club is the companies oldest sponsorship agreement - as they were the
first Club sponsored by the company, formally known as Sealink following
their support of the 1987 Isle of Wight hosted South Coast Rowing
Championships Regatta. It is believed to be the longest running and most
successful sponsorship partnerships in Coastal Rowing and one of the longest
running in the sport of rowing.
Members should therefore take every opportunity to acknowledge the
tremendous support that WIGHTLINK give us, to use their Services when ever
possible and to avoid doing anything that might embarrass the Club or its
main sponsor.
