Ryde R. C. Regatta - Small Ads
Ryde Rowing Clubs Annual
Regatta - part of the Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta Programme - in
addition to the main event sponsorship, is giving an opportunity to members and
friends of the Club , who have their own businesses to take out a "Small Ad" in
the Regatta programme.
Around 700 attend the
Regatta to compete and watch - including many local residents and many of the
Club Members. These adverts will be in a simple format (no pictures or complex
fonts and limited graphics) - they will have a maximum of around twenty words
and will be about 2" x 1" in size and located in the inside pages of the
programme. In addition an advertiser will receive some publicity over the
Regatta PA system during the Regatta - and have a mention on the Regatta's
interactive display in the Clubhouse and enlarged versions of their advert on
display in the Clubhouse. In exchange we are hoping that advertisers would be
prepared to contribute £25 to the Regatta Funds. If you are interested please
contact me at the reply to address/telephone number/E mail address below - or if
you are interested in event sponsorship then let me know and I will send
details.
With my thanks for giving
this some consideration. Regards - and a Happy New Year. Steve Steve Bull.

Annual Presentation 28th
November 2009

Ryde
Rowing Club held its Annual Presentation Dinner last Saturday (28th November) at
the Yelfs Hotel, Union Street, Ryde - where the Club was founded in 1877. Around
seventy members and guests attended including guests of honour Mike and Sue Ward
of Wardhouse Financial Services, the Club Regatta's main sponsors and Kerry
Jackson, the Marketing Manager of Club sponsors Wightlink with her partner Toby.
The Club Captain, Pete Hewison welcomed all the guests and commented on another
successful year for the Club in which they had won three Hants & Dorset Amateur
Rowing Association Championships making them the second most successful Club in
the Association, achieved a record breaking round the Island row and reached the
final stages of the Henley Veterans Regatta as well as South Coast
representative honours - all of which were celebrated in a video presentation of
the season's activities created for the Club by Stu Johnson.
Kerry Jackson, responding on behalf of the guests, congratulated the Club on its
successful season and commented of the strong ties between Wightlink and the
Club. She was then invited by the Clubs Rowing Captain Graham Reeve to present
the Club awards for the season. The first year oarswomen went to Leona Fisk;
First year Oarsman to John Gedling; Coxswain of the year to Dale Buckett;
Oarswomen of the Year to Vici Hewlett and Oarsman of the Year to Tom Clark.
Steve Draper was awarded coach of the year and veteran Russell Page received the
Committee Cup with the Captains Cup going to Tom Clark - his second award of the
evening.
During the evening a raffle and auction, supported by Wighlink, raised over £700
for the Clubs nominated charity - the Naomi House Children's Hospice.

RYDE R. C. PERFORMANCE
KIT from “Stitch” (Formally Sparten).
While the Clubs performance Kit normally has to be especially ordered, with
minimum order quantities of six of each type - and taking up to six weeks to
arrive - we do have in stock and immediately available a small amount of the Kit
- which would make ideal Christmas Presents for our active members. We also
still have very limited stocks of the old design – which are slightly cheaper.
Below is a brief explanation of some the garments [including their previous
'Spartan' name] that we have in stock with the sizes available - they will be
sold on a first come/first to pay basis.
PHOENIX OUTERWEAR.
24/7 Jacket [formerly Reflex Jacket/Fluid Jacket] = performance-orientated 'hardshell'
shape, designed for in-boat use, yet suitable for cross-training [ie. cycling,
running]. Engineered to protect the upper body from the elements [wind > rain >
cold] without overheating. Uses the latest generation of technical stretch
fabrics to allow unrestricted movement. Price: £62. Sizes available from stock -
XL (1), Large (2), Medium (2) and Small (1).
We also have 1 at the old design - size - Medium - at £55.
Cold Days Gilet [formerly the Elite Body] = thermalweight sleeveless
gilet designed for those 'cold days'. Microfleece front, microfibre back with
microfleece lining for added warmth. Price: £48. Sizes available from stock - XL
(1), Large (1).
We also have 1 at the old design - size - Large - at £40.
Dark Mornings Shirt [formerly the Elite Shirt/Fleece] = brand new
semi-fitted microfleece top with neck zip and Meryl contrast binding / underarm
panels. You wake up, it's a dark winter morning, and you've got to get up and
head to the boathouse.... Price: £45. Sizes available from stock - XL (1), Large
(1) and Medium (1).
We also have 1 at the old design - size - Large - at £30.
SEVERN SKINWEAR (All in ones).
All SEVERN Skinwear garments are manufactured from an enhanced version of
performance Meryl knitted specifically for Stitch by a UK mill. Importantly, the
quality of all the below is the same, it's just the 'style' of the kit that
changes [ie. the more complex designs, involving more manufacturing time, are
more expensive!].
Alpha Suit (All in one) 'Unisuit' Price: £40.
Clubs racing kit, white top, blue shorts, three stripes.
Sizes available from stock - XL - Mens (1), Large - Mens (2), Large - Womens (2)
and Medium - Womens (2).
We also have 1 at the old design - size - Large - Womens - at £35.
We also have available from stock - Blazer Badges at £13; Club Ties at £10 and
Rigger Jiggers at £3.

Scullers Head of the
River Race. Saturday, 28th November, 2009.
Four of Wightlink sponsored Ryde
Rowing Clubs Veteran Scullers competed in the Scullers Head of the River Race,
on the Thames on Saturday (28th November). This is a processional race for
single sculls over the 4.25 mile championship course from Mortlake to Putney.
First sculled in 1954, this year’s race involved almost 500 scullers attracting
entries from all over the United Kingdom and the world, with standards ranging
from internationals to novices.
The best result for the Ryde Scullers came from Ian Hayden competing in the
Veteran B category where he finished in an impressive second place and 65th
overall in a time of 22 minutes 12 seconds.
The other three Ryde Scullers were competing in the Veteran C category where the
best performance came from Nick Pike, who finished 4th in that status, 133rd
overall in a time of 22 minutes 51 seconds. Russell Page finished in 6th place
in the category, 164th overall in a time of 23 minutes 4 seconds with Mike
Jenner just behind him in 7th place, 176th overall with a time of 22 minutes 42
seconds.
With all fours Scullers finishing in the top half of and one inside the top 100
this was an impressive set of results for the Ryde Scullers.
The best result from any Islander came from Ryde member Ashley Maitland, racing
for London Rowing Club in the IM1 category he finished 3rd in his status and
32nd overall in a time of 21 minutes 53 seconds.
Ryde R. C. Charity
Donation to Naomi House
Sponsors,
supporters and helpers of Ryde Rowing Club were entertained at an informal
gathering at their Clubhouse on Friday evening (13th November) to thank them for
their support during the last year.
After a welcome and thanks
from Club Captain Peter Hewison, and a short presentation on the clubs
activities and successes in 2009 - which included three Hants & Dorset
Championships and twenty-two wins during the Coastal season - a presentation was
made to a representative on Naomi House, the Children's Hospice, the Clubs
nominated Charity for 2009.
Following various fund
raising activities - the most successful being a round the Island row - in a new
record time for a four of 7 hours 4 minutes - the club was able to hand over a
cheque for over £300 to this very worthwhile cause - to which they have now
donated more than £3000 in the last two years.

Round The Island Row 26th Sept 2009

Ryde Rowing Club has a long tradition of
rowing the fifty-eight miles around the Isle of Wight. Since 1880 fourteen crew
boats – and one single sculler have completed the row and they hold the fixed
seat for record of eight hours six minutes in set 1965; the fastest time in a
Coastal Four of seven hours fifty-seven minutes set in 1995 and the single
sculling record of seven hours fifty-two minutes set in 2005 by Nick Pike. The
Club were the first to complete the row in a Coastal Four in 1979 and had the
only all Ladies Crew to complete the row in 199 and the youngest ever crew, with
an average age of eighteen, in 2003.
The plan this year was to be the first Club to
complete the row in a coxless, coastal quad, which, weather permitting was
likely to be a fast combination and challenge the fastest time for a four oared
boat of seven hours, seven hours fifty-seven minutes, the fastest Ryde time of
seven hours fifty-two minutes and the fastest time for rowing or sculling around
the Island of six hours forty-eight minutes set by Guernsey Rowing Club in 2002
in a coxed six man sculling boat.
The crew for the challenge was the Clubs
Senior Veteran Scullers – Mike Jenner, Russell Page, Nick Pike and Ian Hayden –
all very experienced scullers, with a number of Hants & Dorset ARA Championships
between them. The Boat used - a Burgashell Coastal 4+/4x+ - with the steering
fixed - called "Pat" and was named after Pat Sherwin, MBE, who among his many
achievements in the sport, had also rowed around the Island several times.

A
team of thirteen members of the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club's Junior
Squad competed at the Itchen Imperial Rowing Club Junior Regatta, in
Southampton, on Saturday (26th September).
The best performance of the
day came from the Boys J13 Coxed Quad “A” Crew of Sam Corney, Dale Buckett, Max
Reeve and Christian Lacy, with Bryony Reeve coxing, who, fresh from their 2nd
place at the South Coast Championships Junior Regatta, went one better winning
with this race with comparative ease. They were chased home by the Clubs “B”
Crew of Harry Batchelor, Harvey Kirkby, Andreas Hicks and Emiley Rose with Coach
Graham Reeve coxing – who finished in second place.
Further second places came
from Harvey Kirkby in the J12 Single Scull's and Sam Corney in the J13 Single
Sculls – where Max Reeve finished in 4th place in the final following a
dead-heat in his semi-final and where Dale Buckett reached the semi-final.

Round The Island Row
On a day between 27th
September and 30th October a crew from Ryde Rowing Club hope to complete,
weather permitting, a Round the Isle of Wight row in a Coastal Coxless Quad -
the first time a row would have been completed in this type of boat. They hope
to beat the best time for a Round the Island row by a Ryde crew of seven hours
fifty-seven minutes - and the time set by crew member Nick Pike in a single
scull of seven hours fifty-two minutes. They hope they may even challange the
record breaking round the Island row time of Jersey Rowing Club of six hours
forty eight minutes set in a coxed boat with six scullers in 2002.
The Club is also hoping
that this challenging row will raise some funds through donations for their
nominated charity the Naomi House Children's Hospice.
