Woolston Regatta, Saturday, 27th June, 2009.
Western Shore, Southampton was the venue for
Woolston Regatta, hosted by Southampton Rowing Club on Saturday (27th June)
which marked the half way stage in the 2009 Coastal Rowing Season. Ryde Rowing
Club, sponsored by Wightlink, I. W. Ferries, can be reasonably pleased with
their results so far – with a leading position in three Hants & Dorset
Championships – although maintaining this through the second half of the season
will be a challenge.
There were fairly comfortable wins at the Regatta
for the Ryde Men’s Senior Pair of Ben Ade and Ian Hayden, their 5th win of the
season and for Men’s Senior Sculler – Mike Jenner – his 4th win to date. Ryde
has dominated the Men’s Senior Sculls all season with no other Club yet to
record a win – although on this occasion Ryde’s Ian Hayden and Nick Pike could
only manage 3rd and 6th place behind Mike.
Both the Men’s Senior Pair and Mike Jenner lead
their respective championships along with the Men’s Senior Four of Russell Page,
Ben Ade, Mike Jenner and Ian Hayden with cox Bryony Reeve who finished 2nd in
their final although they were closing fast on the race leaders BTC at the
finish having rowed through the Itchen Senior Four during the final stages of
the race after a poor start.
Their performance may well have been affected by
Ben Ade competing in the Junior Sculls the race before, having already raced in
the pair. Ben finished 5th in the Sculls race, his Ryde colleague, Tom Clark
finishing second.
The Men’s Novice Four of Donat Debrecan, Curtis
Lowe, James Cleary and John Gedling with Dale Buckett coxing will be
disappointed to have just missed out on the final – having been beaten in to 4th
place in their heat – with less than half a length separating them a 4th
consecutive place in the Final.
Newport Regatta, Saturday, 6th
June
Ryde won the top event at Newport’s Rowing
Club’s Annual Regatta on Saturday (6th June) in another successful
day for the Wightlink sponsored Club.
The Men’s Senior A Crew of Russell Page,
Mike Jenner, Ben Ade and Ian Hayden – with Bryony Reeve coxing maintained their
recent impressive form dominating their heat and going on to comfortably win the
final. The Men’s Senior B Crew of Mark Singleton, Nick Pike, Sam Cocker and
Stuart Johnson with Max Reeve in the coxswains seat were unfortunate to be drawn
against their A Crew in the heat – or they to may well have reached the final.
The Men’s Junior Senior Fours of Callum
Lowe, Tom Clark with Novices Florrin Behrle, and John Gedling making up the crew
– and Dale Buckett coxing did exceptionally well to reach their final where they
finished 3rd behind Shanklin and Coalporters – but can claim a share
in Shanklin’s win as they borrowed Ryde coxswain Bryony Reeve to steer their
boat.
The Men’s Novice Four of John Gedling,
James Cleary, Curtis Lowe and Donatt Debrecan with Dale Buckett in the Coxswians
seat once again also finished 3rd having maintained the progress made
in recent weeks to reach a third consecutive Novice Final.
With no pairs racing at Newport because of
the restrictions of tide the focus then switched to the single sculls.
Ryde dominated the Men’s Senior Sculls –
with all three scullers in the final coming Ryde – where Ian Hayden, benefiting
from the straight course and calm conditions, achieved a first ever Senior
Sculls win – with Mike Jenner in second and Nick Pike in third.
Coastal Junior Sculler Tom Clark sculled
well to reach the final but will be disappointed to have to finished 2nd
after winning in previous weeks. However Novice Sculler Florrin Behrle will be
pleased with his performance in reaching the final where he finished 3rd.
Ryde other Novice Scullers – Callum Lowe, Stu Johnson and Sam Cocker, in his
first sculling race all competed well but failed to make the final.

Milford on Sea Regatta, Saturday,
30th May
Ryde
Rowing Clubs excellent start to the
season continued at Lymington Rowing
Clubs Regatta, held at
Milford-on-Sea, on Saturday (30th
May) with the Wightlink sponsored
Club returning to the Island with
five wins.
Their best performance was probably
that of their Men’s Senior Four of
Russell Page, Mike Jenner, Ben Ade
and Ian Hayden – with young Max
Reeve coxing at this level, the
highest in Coastal rowing, for the
first time. The crew had a good
start and were well placed at the
turn when the race was stopped
following an infringement at that
led to a disqualification. In the
re-row the Ryde crew made an even
better start which again had the
well in contention at the buoy turn
after which they steadily pulled
away from the rest of the field to
take their 2nd Senior Fours win of
the season.
Another impressive victory came in
the Men’s Senior Pairs where Ben Ade
and Ian Hayden, who are unbeaten so
far this season, clocked-up the
Clubs fourth successive win to
further enhance their chance of
retaining this Championship.
Mike Jenner won the Men’s Senior
Sculls to take that Championship
point and draw level with Club rival
Nick Pike with two points each – and
to share the lead in the
Championship. Nick was looking
highly likely to finish 2nd to Mike
when he fell foul of the inside
course marker leading to his
disqualification.
Another close contest between two
Ryde Scullers came in the Men’s
Junior Sculls with Tom Clark getting
the better of Ben Ade on this
occasion, winning the event, with
Ben second. They to now have two
Championship Points each and lead
the chase for this Championship.
The Men’s Novice Sculls Final was
very eventful – as it coincided with
the worst conditions of the day
resulting in four of the eight
Scullers capsizing including Ryde
Sculler Callum Lowe. The other two –
Florian Behrle and Stu Johnson
battled through finishing in 3rd and
4th place respectively.
Tom Clark joined the three Novice
Scullers along with Cox Dale Buckett
to race in a Coastal Coxed Quad –
which they won securing the Clubs
fifth win of the day – and the first
time the Club has won a Coastal race
in this discipline.
The Men’s Novice Four of John
Gedling, James Cleary, Curtis Lowe
and Donatt Debrecan with Dale
Buckett in the Coxswians seat once
again continued their recent
progress finishing 3rd in their heat
to secure a place in the final where
they finished 6th
BTC Southampton Regatta, Saturday,
23rd May, 2009.
Holidays
and injury led to a depleted team
from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde
Rowing Club competing at BTC Rowing
Club Regatta, held at western shore,
Southampton, on Saturday (23rd May,
2009) but they still returned to the
Island with two wins to their
credit.
In the Men's Senior Pairs a new format of Russell Page, racing in this
event for the first time this
season, with current H&D Champion
Ian Hayden, dominated the race
winning by four lengths to claim a
3rd Championship Point - extend the
clubs unbeaten run - and put them
well on the way to defending the
Championship title won last years in
this status.
Ryde also continued their domination this season in the Men's Senior
Sculls events with Mike Jenner
winning comfortably to claim his
first point of the season and close
the gap on Ryde's Nick Pike who was
not in attendance. Ian Hayden,
recently returned from injury, also
competed in the Men's Senior
Sculling event, finishing in 3rd
place proving he is nearly back to
his best and ready to challenge for
the title as well.
The Men's Junior Senior Crew of Florian Behrle, Callum Lowe, Tim Wiggins
and Tom Clark with Bryony Reeve
coxing contested a very competitive
race - finishing second to Island
rivals Shanklin. Florian and Callum
then went on to compete in the Men's
Novice sculls finishing 5th and 7th
respectively in their final. Tom
Clark was scheduled to compete in
the men's Junior Sculls but with the
Regatta running late and the risk of
running out of water the starters
were unable to wait for him to reach
the start of his event which was the
race after the Junior Senior Final.
He arrived on the line a full minute
after the other scullers has started
and although bravely giving chase
had given himself far to much to do.
The Men's Novice Crew of John Gedling, Donnatt Debrecan, Curtis Lowe and
James Cleary with Dale Buckett
coxing produced a much improved
performance, finishing 3rd in their
heat, to claim a place in their
first Novice Final - where
admittedly they found the going much
tougher finishing 6th are a spirited
row.
Wessex Junior Regatta 14th June 09
On
the Sunday (14th June) a team of
eight Ryde Juniors – all under 16 –
raced in the Wesssex Junior Regatta,
held at Bryanston School, in Dorset,
where they competed in a number of
boat types in different age groups.
The
Club produced an excellent, if
slightly frustrating sent of
results, recording six second places
but just failing to register a win.
There were second places for Bryony
Reeve, racing above her age group,
in the Girls J16 single; for Harvey
Kirkby in the J11/J12 single; for
the Girls J15 Coxed quad of Sophie
Maxwell, Bryony Reeve, Holly Evans,
Leona Fisk and Cox Max Reeve and for
the Boys J13 Coxed Quad of Sam
Corney, Dale Buckett, Harry
Carpenter and Max Reeve, with Bryony
Reeve coxing.
In
the Boys J13 Single Sculls Dale
Buckett and Max Reeve reached the
semi-finals – with Sam Corney going
one better to reach the final where
he was narrowly beaten. There was a
similar story in the Boys J13 Double
Sculls where Sam Corney and Harry
Carpenter were knocked out in the
semi-final by club rivals Max Reeve
and Dale Buckett who were again
narrowly defeated in the final.
Harvey Kirkby competed in a
composite double with BTC – but they
were knocked out in the semi-final.
Holly
Evans reached the quarter final of
the Girls J14 Single and also
competed in a Girls composite J14
coxed quad with girls from
Christchurch and Itchen Imperial
Rowing Clubs reaching the semi-final
of their event.
Bryony Reeve and Leona Fisk also
competed in the Girls J15 Double
Scull finishing in reaching the
semi-finals and winning the 3rd and
4th place row-off. They also
competed individually in the Girls
J15 singles – Leona, in her first
single sculling race going out in
the first round and Bryony reaching
the semi-final.

Poole
Regatta, Saturday, 13th June
It
was a busy weekend for the Wightlink
sponsored Ryde Rowing Club as they
competed at the Hants & Dorset
Championship Regatta at Poole on the
Saturday (13th June) and the Wessex
Junior Regatta on the Sunday (14th
June).
Inevitably the IW Festival reduced
the numbers competing from the Club
at Poole Regatta but in spite of
this the Ryde Club maintained their
good start to the season returning
to the Island with two wins.
The
Club continued its domination of the
Men’s Senior Sculls with Mike Jenner
winning a close race from club rival
Ian Hayden who finished 2nd. Ian
then teamed up with Russell Page to
race in the Men’s Senior Pairs,
where, while well in contention,
they impeded a crew from Itchen
Imperial Rowing Club resulting in a
justified disqualification and their
first defeat in this event this
season.
Russell Page made amends in the
Double sculls, winning comfortably
after teaming up with Novice Sculler
and exchange student Florrin Behrle,
who was competing for the Club for
the last time for a while as he
returns home to Germany next week.
Florrin also raced in the Men’s
Novice Four with Donnatt Debrecan,
Curtis Lowe, John Gedling and Cox
Dale Buckett – who continued to show
improvement, winning their heat and
finishing 4th in the final – their
best result of the season to date.
