Ryde Rowing Club.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETIN G OF RYDE ROWING CLUB, HELD AT THE CLUBHOUSE, APPLEY PARK, RYDE, I.W. ON FRIDAY, 23rd NOVEMBER, 2001.

There were 26 members in attendance when the Captain, Nick Salter, took the chair and declared the meeting open at 8.15pm, explaining that, in the absence of the Secretary and the Secretary elect he has asked Steve Bull if he would take the minutes.

Steve Bull then read the notice convening the meeting which had been sent to all paid up members registered with the Club on the 1st November, 2001.

Apologies were received from Pete and Kevin Hewison, Liz Van Wyk, Richard Adams, Steve Cook, Nick and Sue Pike Barry Field, Helen Dear and Don and Tony Hickman.

In the absence of the Secretary and Assistant Secretary their were no minutes of the previous meeting available and so the minutes were taken as read on a proposal from Steve Bull, seconded by Steve Dear and agreed by the meeting.

The Hon. Secretaries Report, which had been written and sent by the retiring Secretary, was then read to the meeting by Steve Bull (see attached). The report was accepted by the meeting on a proposal from John Adams, seconded by Ian Lennie.

The Financial Secretary, Steve Dear, then gave his interim report and expressed his pleasure at being able to report on a reasonably comfortable financial position with no debts outstanding and over £4000 on deposit which should see us through the usually difficult winter months.

The Meeting then re-elected the Honorary members - the Senior Police Officer, Newport and Two Representatives of Ryde Inshore Rescue on a proposal from Dave Wheeler, seconded by Mick Hayles and added Louis Attrill, the Island born Olympic Oarsman, on a proposal from John Adams, seconded by Steve Cook.

The meeting then elected the Officers for the ensuing year - Harry Calloway was re-elected President, on a proposal from John Adams, seconded by N. Salter and he thanked the meeting for this continued honor, before taking the Chair for the re-election of Nick Salter as Captain on a proposal from John Adams, seconded by Chris Jenkins; Steve Titmus was elected Vice/Rowing Captain on a proposal from J. Adams, seconded by M. Jenner; Steve Dear was re-elected as Hon. Financial Secretary, on a proposal from John Adams, seconded by Nick Salter; Pete Hewison was elected as Hon. Secretary on a proposal from Nick Salter, seconded by Chris Jenkins and Esme Shakeshaft and Angela Evans were re-elected Reporting Accountants on a proposal from Steve Dear, seconded by Nick Salter. There was no proposal for Assistant Secretary and the meeting was not aware if Sue Terry wished to continue in this role and so this was held over for the General Committee to investigate and co-opt as necessary. A vote of thanks was passed to the two retiring Officers - Kevin Hewison and Nick Pike.

The election of Vice Presidents provoked some debate in which Steve Bull expressed his view that as a non-political Association the ex-MP Peter Brand, and the new MP - Andrew Turner should not be re-elected or elected as Vice Presidents - pointing out that the position of Ex MP Barry Field was very different as he made significant financial contributions to the Club. The meeting, however chose to re-elect the following Vice Presidents, on a proposal from John Adams, seconded by D. Wheeler - P. Brand, H. Calloway, D. Collingwood, B. Field, T. Gale, M. Hough, C. Hunter, W. Kennerley, I. Lallow, D. Leal, R. Lowe, Manager of Yelfs Hotel, J. Manners, Lord Colin Moynihan, S. Peters, J. Phillips, J. Ritchie, J. Saville, P. Sherwin, MBE, I. Walker and M. Ward - with the addition of S. Harwood, proposed by J. Adams, seconded by J. Bull, A. Turner, MP, proposed by I. Lennie, seconded by S. Dear and G. Newman, proposed by S. Bull, seconded by N. Salter.

Members of the General Committee were then elected - John Adams, April Briscoe, Steph Hickman and Jackie Tottis were serving until 2002 and did not require re-election although the position of April Briscoe was of concern and the new committee should find out her intentions. There were three nominations for the remaining four places, Chris Jenkins proposed by Nick Salter, seconded by Josie Bull; Steve Bull proposed by Nick Salter, seconded by Chris Jenkins and Chris Aitkin, proposed by Chris Jenkins, seconded by John Adams, and all were duly elected with one place left to fill - which would be co-opted by the General Committee.

There were very few proposals for members of the Bar Committee the only appointment being made being that of Bar Manager where Steph Hickman was reelected on a proposal from Ian Lennie, seconded by Steve Titmus. The remaining positions would have to be co-opted by the General Committee who would have to carry out the duties of the Bar Committee until the issue was resolved.

The then considered and voted upon and accepted the proposed rule changes (see attached) proposed by the General Committee which, as explained by Steve Bull, was designed to bring the rules in line with the latest requirements for grant aid and ease communication with members via electronic mail when available.

There being no other business received in accordance with Rule 11D, the Captain declared the meeting closed at 9.05pm with his thanks to those in attendance.

RYDE ROWING CLUB

Secretary’s Report to the Annual General Meeting

held at the Clubhouse on

Friday 23rd November 2001 @ 8.00 p.m.

The Club can consider 2001 to have been a successful year, with more crews competing on a regular basis at most Regatta’s.

The Senior A Crew narrowly missed out on a representative slot for the South Coast Championships, however, they did record a creditable 2nd in the Open Senior race at the event against a controversial crew.

The Junior Senior and Men’s Junior Crews both recorded wins in the Hants and Dorset season which qualified them for representative honours at the South Coast where, although not standing on the winners podium, both achieved runner up places.

The new Men’s Novice Crew with one win during the season, went on to win the Open Novice race at the same event.

With a number of runner up positions achieved by various other crews, plus a win for a mixed fours, a Bronze Medal in the Coastal coxless pairs at the Nationals, Head wins, and ARA “ GO ROW “ Certificates attained by two of our Adaptive Rowing section, our congratulations must go to all those members involved, on their success.

This success is of course due in no small part to the time and effort given throughout the year by our dedicated team of coaches and trainers, and our thanks must go to them.

Crew members are now engaged in winter land training with the Clubhouse in use most weekday evenings. It is however planned that various Head races will be entered for, during the coming months.

On the subject of coaching, and on the premise that you can never have enough, the Club will, subject to time and interest, run Instructors courses during the winter.

In May Ryde Rowing Club once again hosted a very successful regatta.

This was as usual organised and managed by Steve Bull, who always gets the crews home on time.

This event is a major fund-raiser for the Club and our thanks to Steve, the Ryde Rowing Club Catering Crew, bar staff volunteers and all others involved for making it profitable.

Unfortunately the Committee has to report that Southern Water, the main regatta sponsor for the past few years, has informed the Club that, as from 2002 it will no longer be in a position to fulfil that function.

Although this is obviously a blow, Steve informs us that it will not affect the smooth running of the regatta next year. However, it is a difficulty that needs rectifying as soon as possible and he is working hard towards securing a replacement, as yet with no success. He will welcome any suggestions.

Fund raising efforts continued throughout the year.

The sponsored ergo row on the Wightlink Ferries once again took place at Easter, with the monies raised to charitable causes.

Under the banner of the “ Red Nose Day “ our junior section raised just under £1,000.00, again to charitable causes. Congratulations to all those who participated.

On the home front, John Adams organised and ran two successful “ Horse Race Nights “ and Ian Lennie continues to run the 150 Club successfully with monthly Fish and Chip supper evenings for which he arranges guest speakers.

These functions whilst making a profit in themselves towards Club funds also, of course, improve bar take. However, I am sorry to report that support from Club members could be better.

Use of the Club premises by the public continues to improve. Word is obviously getting around as to the ideal facility we have, particularly for small parties etc.

Our appreciation must be recorded to Steph’ Hickman for organising bar stock and staff for these functions and indeed throughout the year.

The Club’s on the water activities would of course be severely hampered were it not for the continued support of Wightlink. They were once again most generous in provision of concessionary tickets for cross Solent travel.

This sponsorship is the result of the hard work put in by Steve Bull and others in maintaining the good relationship built up over past years. Long may it continue.

Unfortunately, due to illness, their representatives were unable to join us as guests of the Club, at our awards presentation dinner in September.

The Annual Awards Presentation Dinner was held at Ryde Theatre on Saturday 29th September, when over 100 members and their guests attended.

Guest of Honour was Jurgen Grobler, Chief Coach to the British Men’s Heavyweight Squad, accompanied by his wife Angela.

Also attending as a private guest was Island born Louis Attrill, Gold Medallist at the Sydney Olympics.

During the afternoon of the 29th, Messrs Grobler and Attrill took part in a question and answer session at the Clubhouse, much appreciated by the rowing members and coaches who were able to be there.

The awards in the evening were presented by Mrs. Grobler, and were as follows :

ARA “ Go-Row” Certificates.           Maggie Samir-Youseff and

Catherine Coeshott.

First Rowing win “Spoons”   .           Richard Johnson, Stuart Johnson,

Chris Aitkin, Steve Hunns, Ollie Bottrell,

                                                            Nick Christopher and Becky York.

First Year Oarswomen’s Cup.         Becky York.

First Year Oarsmen’s Cup.              Steve Hunns.

Coxswain of the year.                       Sam Billington.

Oarswoman of the year.                   Claire Salter.

Oarsman of the year.                        Ashley Maitland.

Coaches Cup.                                   Petra Saunders.

Committee Cup.                                Ian Walker.

Captains Cup.                                   Steph’ Hickman.

During the course of the year the committee has met on a monthly basis to deal with Club business. Newsletters were published and distributed, and reports written and published in the I.W. County Press, Local Radio and the Regatta magazine.

Just a few short years ago Ryde Rowing Club was fortunate to move into brand new facilities. Needless to say wear and tear takes its toll.

In the New Year a program of refurbishment will commence, being in the main paint and emulsion.

The committee will be looking for volunteers to donate a couple of hours here and there to assist. The more bodies we have the less time it will take.

Remember – It’s your Club.

Finally, due to now living and working on the mainland I am unable to allow myself to be considered for the position of Secretary for another year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and assistance during my term of office. It’s been an honour to serve as Secretary of Ryde Rowing Club.

Kevin Hewison.

Hon. Secretary.

Ryde Rowing Club.
