Ryde Rowing Club had its most successful day of the Hants and Dorset ARA season so far on Saturday (13th August) at the BTC Rowing Club Regatta at Western Shore, Southampton.

Pride of place went to Ian Hayden who’s win in the Men’s Senior Sculls, his 4th win of the season, secured the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Associations Championship. Club colleague Mick Jenner finished in 3rd place in the same event.

Young Sam Corney raced in the Men’s Novice Sculls, winning his heat, but, with one eye on his Men’s Novice Fours final to come, finished some way down the field in the final.

The surprise of the day was the performance of the Men’s Coastal Junior Crew of - Charlie Gedling, Charlie Norman, Joe Norman, Harvey Kirkby with Bryony Reeve coxing - racing for the first time at this level following their 2nd Novice win the previous week and promotion to this status. In a close race the young crew kept pace with the more experienced crews in the race – and surprised them all at the finish with a late surge that propelled them into the lead – to take a second consecutive win and a further promotion to Junior Senior status next season.

The Clubs remaining Men’s Novice crew of Dale Buckett, Sam Corney, Andreas Hicks and Max Reeve with Bryony Reeve coxing once again - were determined to prove that they too were worthy of promotion and stormed into an early lead in their final which they held to the end in spite of coming under huge pressure over the final two hundred meters. A second win in either of the two remaining championship races will secure there promotion to Coastal Junior status.

Finally and more predictably the Clubs Novice Crew – with Katie Corney replacing Bryony as the coxswain – won the J16 fours event fairly comfortably, to maintain the Clubs 100% record in this event this season – and secure the Clubs 4th win of the day.
