NEWS FOR RYDE
ROWING CLUB MEMBERS. AUGUST, 2000.
ANNUAL CLUB REGATTA - ANNUAL DINNER & DANCE - ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS - BAR DUTIES. HELP NEEDED - BOAT NAMING CEREMONY - CAR BOOT SALES - CLUB CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS - CLUBHOUSE SECURITY - EVENTS AT THE CLUBHOUSE - GB OLYMPIC EIGHT VISIT RYDE - How's the Rowing Going - ROWING Update - SUMMER BALL CANCELED - USE OF CLUBHOUSE & MINIBUS The Officers and Committee of Ryde Rowing Club are pleased to announce that WIGHTlink, the Isle of Wight Ferry Service, have agreed to continue their Sponsorship of the Club for a further year - from May, 2000 to May, 20001. Club Members , especially the Active Members, will appreciate how important this continued sponsorship is and we hope all Members will use the Wightlink Services as frequently as possible for their mainland trips, acknowledge their sponsorship of the Club - and give due respect to Wightlink and their staff when travelling with them. .Annual subscriptions were due on the first of March, and while the majority of members have paid - there are a few in arrears. Those of you who our records show still owe this years subscriptions will find a reminder notice enclosed. Members who have not paid by the end of August will have their names removed from the membership list and will no longer have the right to use the Clubs facilities. Unfortunately this years Summer Ball had to be canceled due to lack of numbers. This will have an effect of the Clubs financial position - the Clubs finances are satisfactory and their is no immediate danger but the income from the Ball over the last few years has allowed us to continue to improve the Clubhouse facilities and rowing equipment. The loss of this income will force the delay or postponement of some of our plans for further improvements. A small sub committee has been established to consider the future of the Sumer Ball - has its run its course, should the format change, should it take place every other year! Your thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. We occasionally receive comments and complaints from members that the Bar at the Clubhouse is not open as often as it should be - which is a fair criticism. However it should be remembered that all our bar staff are volunteers from the membership - and while at some time in the future in may be possible to have a paid steward this is not a practical or financially viable solution at this time - we must continue to rely on volunteers. At the beginning of the year the Club had nearly three hundred members - but amazingly only around fifteen members volunteer to do a bar duty. If just another dozen or so members were prepared to do a Bar duty once a month then we could be open on a much more regular basis. Please give this some consideration and contact the Bar manager Steph Hickman on 613077 if you can help. For the record the Bar is usually open staff permitting, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings from around 8.00pm and on Sunday lunch times from 12 midday. The Bar is open occasionally on other evenings and for functions - see notice boards - or telephone the Club - on 562127 to see if it is open to save a wasted trip. The Clubs competitive crews are having a reasonably successful season - with a number of Hants & Dorset Championship wins and two Bronze medals at the National Championships. We have also gained accreditation as an "Go Row" Club part of the ARAs National Junior Rowing Programme which recognizes are success in this area. For more details see the enclosed Rowing Update.News of a Couple of Members who have moved of the Island - but continued their rowing careers - Simon Jones who has just graduated from Imperial College has been selected for the GB under 23 Squad and Brian Ingle now living in Portsmouth and rowing for Southsea is on the brink of becoming the Hants & Dorset Junior Sculling Champion. The Clubhouse is available for use by Members for Parties, receptions etc.. and Bar Extensions can usually be arranged. There are a number of conditions and restrictions imposed - in most cases a small hire fee will be charged, plus the cost of any Bar extension and a returnable deposit - first contact should be with Steph Hickman on 613077 - to book a date and discuss details. Under certain circumstances, and subject to meeting various conditions it is possible for Club members to use the Club Minibus. It may also be possible to provide a driver. Any member interested in the use of this facility should contact Nick Salter in the first instance - on 614454 The planned joint venture with Binstead County Primary School for a Charity shop unfortunately fell through because the shop was withdrawn at the last minute. However the items collected were successfully and profitably sold at Car Boot Sales - and we plan to do several more. If you have some suitable items please put them in the downstairs disabled toilet at the Clubhouse where they will be sorted and sold. More information from Josie Bull - 566481. A very successful Club Regatta was held on Saturday, 20th of May with a good attendance from the mainland Clubs, some excellent racing in reasonable conditions and a lively and profitable evening Disco. As well as Southern Water who were the Regattas main sponsor further support was received from the BISKRA BEACH HOTEL, WIGHT LEISURE, ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL, BARCLAYS, WARD HOUSE FINANCIAL SERVICES, APPLEY BEACH CAFE, SDS SCAFFOLDING, THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY PRESS, HARWOODS & WIGHTLINK. Earlier in the year the Club named two new boats and one new boat to the Club in a ceremony at the Clubhouse. A new plastic Coastal four was named "Lizzie" after the wife of ex Captain Steve Cook. This experimental boat built on the Island by FBM Marine and Plastechnol and was part funded by our a National Lottery Sports Grant negotiated by Steve. A replacement River Coxless Double Scull/Pair paid for by the Insurance claim following the accident on the River Medina last year which destroyed the origional boat was named "Chain Reaction". Those who are aware of the circumstances of the accident will understand the name! Finally the Club purchased a second hand Coastal Scull - named "Kma" after Club Captains Wife and daughters (first letter of their Christian names). Most of the members of the GB Olympic Eight , including Island born Louis Attrill - and Tim Foster from the GB Coxless Four visited the Island for a Olympic Fund-raiser at the end of July. They arrived at the Biskra Beach Hotel, in Ryde, who were hosting the event, by Hovercraft at around midday and stayed into the evening enjoying a barbecue and refreshments provided by local businesses. Among around one hundred and fifty other invited guests were many Club members - and members of Shanklin, Newport, Southsea and Lymington Rowing Clubs who had a rare opportunity to share experiences and learn from these top athletes. Over two and a half thousand pounds was raised for the Olympic Rowing fund. CLUB CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS. The Club through its various fundraising activities has been able to make a number of Charitable contributions this year. We have been able to donate £86 to the Earl Moutbatten Hospice following last years Great River Race and £170 to the Wightlink and I.W. Radio Charity Minibus Appeal following the "Ergo" row on the car Ferry earlier in the year. A contribution was also made to the Island Race 2000 - a national charitable event involving a "round Great Britain" relay. Following the theft of the telephone from the Clubhouse hall last year a surveillance camera has now been installed - but in spite of this extra security please take all security precautions when using the Clubhouse. In particular ensure that doors are locked and windows closed when if you are the last to leave. ANNUAL DINNER & DANCE. Binstead, Ryde, I.W. .Ryde Rowing has successfully gained accreditation as a "Go-Row" Club under the Amateur Rowing Associations National Junior Rowing Programme - the first Island Club to receive this award and one of only three to receive accreditation in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. The award acknowledges the success of Ryde Rowing Clubs very successful youth Programme. To gain accreditation the Ryde Club, who are sponsored by Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries, had to meet the criteria laid down by the Amateur Rowing Association including affiliation to the ARA; adoption of the ARAs Child Protection Policy and Procedures; strong Club management; qualified coaches; warm, dry and well lit facilities and a range of equipment - including boats specially designed for teaching new oarsman and women. The Clubs senior Coaches had to make a presentation to Bryan Wilson, one of the Amateur Rowing Associations full time Coaching Development Officers who visited the Club to inspect the facilities and equipment and to carry out a full Safety Inspection - all of which met the exacting criteria laid down by the ARA. As a "Go-Row" Club Ryde will have access to all the National Junior Rowing Programme materials to assist in the delivery of their Junior Rowing Programme and will receive priority advice from Regional Coaching Development Officers. They will also receive Club based seminars, workshops and support with funding applications to assist with the further development of the Programme. HANTS & DORSET SEASON. The Club is having a reasonably successful Hants & Dorset season with wins at Men's Junior Senior, Junior and Novice Coxed fours - with a good chance of gaining selection to represent the Hants & Dorset ARA at the Southcoast Championships at Appledore, North Devon for the Junior and Junior Senior Crews. The Club is boating an average of six crews per Regatta - including a regular Senior Crew for the first time for several years. Both the Senior Crew and the Junior B are making finals on a regular basis - the Junior Ladies Crews have had some good rows and we are expecting a Novice Ladies win in the near future. We have also had a Cadet win at Poole - and would have had one at Woolston had all the opposition not withdrawn! Winning Crews:Junior Seniors - Richard Adams, Pete Neville, Chris Jenkins, Ian hayden (Str) and Ashley Maitland (Cox). Juniors - Matt Coggins, Steve Salter, Ben Ade, Matt Allsopp (Str) and Clare Salter (Cox). Mens Novice Crew - Ashely Maitland, Matt Evans, Tom Fairey and Mike Palin (Str) Cadet Crew - Ashley Maitland, Mike Palin, Kathryn Arnold, Clare Salter (Str) with Matt Bull (Cox). The Club also competed in and won a friendly race at Yarmouth - the Royal Solent Yacht Club - who are trying to establish a rowing section - with our regular crews mixed up and the addition of a number of veteran oarsman! TWO BRONZE MEDALS AT THE NATIONALS. Unlike many Hants & Dorset Clubs Ryde Rowing Club honoured their commitment to the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association by entering Crews for the Coastal events at the National Rowing Championships in Nottingham - and were rewarded with two Bronze Medals - one for Men's Coastal Single Sculler Richard Adams and one for the Men's Coastal coxed Four of - Gary Walters, Pete Neville, Chris Jenkins, Ian Hayden and Ashley Maitland (cox). The Club also boated two Junior Crews in the River events - a J16 Coxed Four of Steve Salter, Ben Ade, Matt Allsopp and Matt Coggins with Clare Salter cox - and a J15 Coxed Quad of Mike Palin, Chris Walker, Lee Bennett, Matt Bull and Ashley Maitland (Cox) . While neither crew made the final they both showed an improvement on the previous year beating several crews. The Club is indebted to CARISBROOKE SHIPPING who provided financial assistance for this trip. ISLE OF WIGHT ROWING CLUBS COXING COURSE. Eight Island coxswains recently completed the first Isle of Wight Rowing Clubs Coxswains Course. The Course Tutors were the Islands Amateur Rowing Association Silver Award Coaches - Lesley Walters and Steve Bull, assisted by Instructors Award holder Gary Walters. The course was spread over a number days and included theory and practical sessions with different parts of the course being held at each Island Club. Areas covered were the role and duties of the coxswain, steering in particular situations, water safety, boat handling, steering a coastal four, steering a river four, steering a river eight, the coastal turn, boat handling in rough water, motivating a crew, capsize drill and swim test. Each successful applicant received individual feedback from the coaches on their strengths and areas to develop and a certificate of achievement. Five of the eight successful participants were from the Ryde Club - Ashley Maitland, Anna Bateman, Claire Salter, Kathryn Arnold, and Sam Billington. COACH DEVELOPMENT. As part of the Clubs Coach development Programme seven Club Coaches - Steve Bull, Chris Van Wyk, Chris Jenkins, Nick Salter, Liz Van Wyk, Stef Hickman and Petra Saunders have successfully completed an RYA Level 2 Power Boat users course - giving the Club a group of fully qualified Launch Drivers - in anticipation of this becoming mandatory in the near future. The course was staged by Ryde Inshore Rescue and Brading Haven Yacht Club and it is our intention to repeat the course during the close season. Those interested should give their names to the Rowing Captain Chris Jenkins. The Club is also hosting a Wessex Regional Rowing Council Instructors Award Course - the first part of the ARA Coaching Award scheme - for Island and Wessex Region Clubs - and we hope to have a number of participants from Ryde to increase our Coaching strength.
