Ryde Rowing Club. NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER, 2000

The Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 1ND. Tel: 01983 562127.

NEWS FOR RYDE ROWING CLUB MEMBERS.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The Clubs Annual General Meeting takes place on Friday, 24th November at 8.00am at the Clubhouse. If applicable the Notice convening the meeting and Agenda are enclosed with this Newsletter. Please make every effort to attend - while, if you do not attend the AGM we can only assume you are happy with the way the Officers and Committee are running the Club it would be nice to see a few more than just the "usual faces" - and perhaps take a more active part in the running of the Club. The notice seeking nominations for the various position is on the Committee Notice board in the downstairs hall of the Clubhouse.

ANNUAL PRESENTATION DINNER.

The Annual Presentation Dinner & Dance takes place at Ryde Town Hall on Saturday, 18th November. Tickets are just £20 and are selling fast. Simon Dennis from Britain's Gold Medal Winning Olympic Eight should be attending and we hope that a couple of other members of our Olympic Team may be present. Tickets are available from Ian Lennie - 612877 - see attached "flyer"

SUCCESS AT THE SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS and a GOOD HANTS & DORSET SEASON.

The Clubs Junior A Crew, of Matt Allsopp, Matt Coggins, Ben Ade, and Steve and Claire Salter, won the South Coast Junior Championships in Appledore & Instow in September having qualified after row-off against Coalporters and BTC following their two wins at Hants & Dorset Regattas. For more details see the Rowing Update.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS.

While not a major concern the Clubs finances are always a little stretched at this time - and the loss of the Summer Ball has made this a little more awkward than usual. As a result the Committee has had to "tighten" its belt a bit - and there will be no major expenditure for a while. To help ease the position the Bar Prices have been increased slightly - although they are still very competitive - and Regatta Fees have been increased during the winter as the River Races we compete in are much more expensive than the Coastal events. Hopefully these actions will have the desired effect - although we reserve the right to review subscriptions etc.. in February at the Financial AGM. You can all help by using the Club as much as possible, paying your subs on time, turning-off lights, heaters etc.. when not in use.

Subscriptions - a Final Reminder!

Those members who it would appear have still not paid their Annual Subscription will find a Final Notice enclosed. Those who have not paid by the end of November will have their names deleted from the Membership records and may have to clear the arrears before rejoining in the future.

Merrydown

Sailing Races.

This years Merrydown sailing races were both won by Andrew Patterson of Gurnard Sailing Club - who has gone on to become the Cherub National Champion (obviously helped by the Merrydown consumed) . He also became the first winner of the new aggregate trophy - a Merrydown Barrel - refurbished by Dave Wheeler. Our thanks to Mick Hayles for organizing the event - and all his helpers.

USE OF CLUBHOUSE.

The Clubhouse is available for use by Members for Parties, receptions etc.. and is a good way of helping the Club as functions are a major source of income. Bar Extensions can usually be arranged. There are a number of conditions and restrictions imposed - in most cases a small hire fee will be charged, plus the cost of any Bar extension and a returnable deposit - first contact should be with Steph Hickman on 613077 - to book a date and discuss details. Also under certain circumstances, and subject to meeting various conditions it is possible for Club members to use the Club Minibus. It may also be possible to provide a driver. Any member interested in the use of this facility should contact Nick Salter in the first instance - on 614454.

New Years Eve Party. After last years successful combined New Years Eve Party with the IW Honda M/Cycle Owners Club at our

Clubhouse with have invited them to join us once again. The format will be similar to last year - entry will be free to members of the two Clubs - but those attending will be expected to bring along some food "American Supper" style. There will be music and fireworks at midnight. Fancy dress is optional but encouraged.

Christmas and New Years Eve Opening.

During the Christmas Holiday period the Club will be open as follows -

Christmas Eve - Lunch time & Evening.

Christmas Day - CLOSED.

Boxing Day - Lunch time

New Years Eve - Lunch time & Evening.

BAR DUTIES. HELP NEEDED.

We occasionally receive comments and complaints from members that the Bar at the Clubhouse is not open as often as it should be - which is a fair criticism. However it should be remembered that all our bar staff are volunteers from the membership - and while at some time in the future in may be possible to have a paid steward this is not a practical or financially viable solution at this time - we must continue to rely on volunteers. At the beginning of the year the Club had nearly three hundred members - but amazingly only around fifteen members volunteer to do a bar duty. If just another dozen or so members were prepared to do a Bar duty once a month then we could be open on a much more regular basis. (If all 300 members would do one we could open nearly every day - and only have to do one duty a year each!) Please give this some consideration and contact the Bar manager Steph Hickman on 613077 if you can help. For the record the Bar is usually open staff permitting, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings from around 8.00pm and on Sunday lunch times from 12 midday. The Bar is open occasionally on other evenings and for functions - see notice boards - or telephone the Club - on 562127 to see if it is open to save a wasted trip.

Ryde Rowing Club.

ROWING Update.

The Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 1ND. Tel: 01983 562127. NOVEMBER, 2000. NEWS FOR ROWING MEMBERS - FROM THE ROWING SUB COMMITTEE.

Ryde R. C. - accredited by the ARA as a "Go-Row" Club under the National Junior Rowing Programme.

Wyk - also competed on a regular basis and often made finals giving us high hopes for these crews for next season. With the Bronze Medal at the National Championships The 44th South Coast Rowing Championships.

The 44th South Coast Rowing Championships held at Appledore & Instow, North Devon in September were a major disappointment for the majority of crews in entered with the Open and Invitation events cancelled for the third time in four years due to the poor organisation and bad weather. But for Ryde - and a couple of other Clubs, notably our neighbours and friends at Southsea, there was something to cheer about as out Junior A Crew of Matt Allsopp, Matt Coggins, Ben Ade, Steve Salter and Clare Salter, and coached by Liz Van Wyk won their Championship race in fine style. They had qualified the hard way - having to win a row-off for the second place against Coalporters and BTC - and it appeared that they were going to have a disappointing row with the commentator stating that they were in last place with just 300m to go. But suddenly it all changed - he had mistaken Bexhill for Ryde - and we were the clear winners to add another South Coast championship win to our already impressive record in this event. Our other Championship Crew - the Junior Seniors - of Richard Adams, Pete Neville, Chris Jenkins, Ian Hayden, and Ashley Maitland had a disappointing row finishing 5th bit contributed to a great performance by the Hants & Dorset ARA - who with Southsea’s wins in the Men's Senior Fours and Junior Ladies Fours were clearly the best Association once again.

The Hants & Dorset Season.

The Club had an average entry of seven Crews in Hants & Dorset Regattas during the season - the most for some years. Wins were achieved by the Junior Senior Crew - their three wins making them runners-up for the Hants & Dorset Championship; The Junior A Crew - two wins - and runners up for the Hants & Dorset Championship; A Men's Novice Fours win - the crew being Ashley Maitland, Matt Evans, Tom Faraday and Mike Pailin with xxxxxxxxxxxxxx cox - and a Novice Ladies win - with a crew of Jodie Cocker, Kate Davidson, Marie Young and Clare Salter with Kathryn Arnold Cox. The Club also won a Cadet race - Mike Palin and Ashley Maitland teaming up with Clare Salter and Kathryn Arnold - with Matt Bull as Cox - and would have won more if the misguided Hants & Dorset rule did not handicap success by preventing Coastal Juniors from competing. A Men's Senior Crew - the first to complete a full season for many years, a Ladies Junior Crew and a Men's Junior B Crew - along with Junior Sculler - Chris Van this should be regarded as a reasonably successful season.

"Go Row" Initiatives.

Two "Go Row" initiatives are under way - as part of the ARA’s National Junior Rowing Program - a link with Mayfield School which takes place on Wednesdays after School, is run by Liz and Chris Van Wyk, and has already seen 15 young people begin the "dry start" program on ergometers - and a program for disables "rowers" taking place on Friday evenings - again strating with "Dry Start" on Ergo’s and run by Steve Bull and Petra Saunders. The "Wet Start" program - on the Canoe Lake - has just started - all help welcome!

ROWING FEES FOR RIVER RACES.

With some concern expressed at the last General Committee Meeting (October 2000) over the Clubs Financial position the Rowing Sub-Committee, with the approval of the General Committee have agreed that the following rates will be charged to members competing in River Races during the winter. [ It should be noted that in almost all cases entry fees for River Races are higher than the Hants & Dorset - and can be up to 400% higher!] - ROWING FEE - £8.00. Cadet - £4.

In addition in you travel in the Club Minibus you will pay an additional £5 - Cadets and Coxswains - £2.50.

ARAmembership or the equivalent ARA Day ticket fee is the responsibility of the individual member. ARAday tickets must be paid to the Club in advance or the entry will not be made. Members in arrears for Rowing/ Transport fees will not be entered for another race until their arrears are cleared. A minimum of the equivalent of two fours entries ( 8 rowing) will be required before the Club will consider an entry in a river event.

Provisional Coaching Allocations:
