Woolston Regatta, Saturday, 27th June, 2009.

Western Shore, Southampton was the venue for Woolston Regatta, hosted by Southampton Rowing Club on Saturday (27th June) which marked the half way stage in the 2009 Coastal Rowing Season. Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, I. W. Ferries, can be reasonably pleased with their results so far – with a leading position in three Hants & Dorset Championships – although maintaining this through the second half of the season will be a challenge.

There were fairly comfortable wins at the Regatta for the Ryde Men’s Senior Pair of Ben Ade and Ian Hayden, their 5th win of the season and for Men’s Senior Sculler – Mike Jenner – his 4th win to date. Ryde has dominated the Men’s Senior Sculls all season with no other Club yet to record a win – although on this occasion Ryde’s Ian Hayden and Nick Pike could only manage 3rd and 6th place behind Mike.

Both the Men’s Senior Pair and Mike Jenner lead their respective championships along with the Men’s Senior Four of Russell Page, Ben Ade, Mike Jenner and Ian Hayden with cox Bryony Reeve who finished 2nd in their final although they were closing fast on the race leaders BTC at the finish having rowed through the Itchen Senior Four during the final stages of the race after a poor start.

Their performance may well have been affected by Ben Ade competing in the Junior Sculls the race before, having already raced in the pair. Ben finished 5th in the Sculls race, his Ryde colleague, Tom Clark finishing second.

The Men’s Novice Four of Donat Debrecan, Curtis Lowe, James Cleary and John Gedling with Dale Buckett coxing will be disappointed to have just missed out on the final – having been beaten in to 4th place in their heat – with less than half a length separating them a 4th consecutive place in the Final.
