Ryde's J16 squad dominated the their events at Woolston Regatta on Saturday
(18th June) taking 1st and 2nd place in both the J16 Coxed Fours and the J16
single sculls.
In the Coxed fours the two Ryde crews stormed away from the start to lead the
field and raced neck and neck, with never more than half a length between them
and nearly repeating the dead heat from earlier in the season at Poole Regatta.
But at the finish line it was the "A" crew of - Dale Buckett, Sam Corney,
Andreas Hicks and Max Reeve with Katie Corney coxing -that just snatched the
lead from the "B" crew of - Charlie Gedling, Charlie Norman, Joe Norman, Harvey
Kirkby with Ed Newnham coxing - with both crews well ahead of the field.
In the J16 single sculls the two young Ryde Scullers again took an early lead,
in difficult conditions, with Sam Corney slowly pulling away from the younger
and less experienced Harvey Kirkby who battled away to stay in contention, Sam
eventually winning by about four lengths.
The two J16 Fours also competed in the Men's Novice fours event where a change
in fortune saw the "B" crew reach the final where they finished in 2nd place.
The "A" crew just failed to make the final a broken seat costing them their
place.
The Wightlink sponsored Club also had some Novice Ladies competing - with -
Bryony Reeve, Sophie Brown and Gemma Smith - lining up with a girl from
Southampton to form a composite crew - who managed a creditable 5th place in
their heat but missed out on a place in the final.
The men's Seniors were also competing with Senior Scullers Ian Hayden and Mick
Jenner finishing 3rd and 4th respectively in their final and the pair of Ben Ade
and Stu Johnson finishing 4th in their event. These four then got together to
race in a four with Max Reeve coxing, which finished 4th in the final.
