Press Release. Ryde R. C. Bournemouth Regatta. 6th August, 2011.
Ryde's Novice Men's Crews totally dominated their event at Bournemouth Regatta
on Saturday (6th August, 2011). Both crews - the "A" Crew of Andreas Hicks, Dale
Buckett, Sam Corney and Max Reeve - with Bryony Reeve coxing - and the "B" Crews
of Charlie Gedling, Joe and Charlie Norman and Harvey Kirkby, with Ed Newnham
Coxing - were drawn in the same heat but both qualified for the final with ease
- rowing well within themselves. In the final, in steadily worsening conditions,
the two Ryde crews stormed away from the start quickly to establish a
comfortable lead over the other finalists. They remained in close contact up to
the turn - but on the return leg the "B" crew slowly pulled ahead to win the
race - and as this was their 2nd Novice win - promotion to Coastal Junior
status. The "A" crew finished in 2nd place with both crews were well ahead of
the rest of the field.
While the worsening conditions probably suited these two young lightweight Men's
crews - the Novice Ladies crew of Leanne Mitchell, Sophie Brown, Gemma Smith and
Bryony Reeve with Max Reeve coxing found the the going a little harder and in
spite of a spirited row failed to make the final.
Ian Hayden and Mike Jenner Racing in the Men's Senior Sculls event, who both
prefer calmer waters, also struggled in the difficult conditions, finishing
outside the top three places. Mick Jenner then paired up with Joe Norman to race
a double scull in the final race of the - but capsized at the turn, however they
were able to right the boat and get back in and finish the race although,
inevitably, they finished well down the field as a result.
