The final weekend of the Hants & Dorset season was a busy but successful one
for Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club as they competed in a “double header”
with Christchurch on the Saturday (20th August) and Lymington on the Sunday
(21st August).
Christchurch Regatta, held on the narrow River Stour– is limited to fours only
and two boat racing, meaning crews have a number of rounds to fight through to
reach their events final.
The best performance from the Ryde crews came from their Veteran Four of – Mick
Jenner, Simon Saunders, Nick Pike and Russell Page, with Ed Newnham Coxing who,
competing in this event for only the 2nd time this season, raced confidentially
in the early rounds to secure a place in the final where they maintained their
one hundred percent record with a comfortable win.
There were some good performances from the other Ryde crews with the Men’s
Junior crew of - Charlie Gedling, Charlie Norman, Joe Norman, Harvey Kirkby with
Ed Newnham coxing again - fighting through to the semi-final before loosing out
to the eventual winners from Coalporters. A similar fate befell the fast
improving Novice Ladies crew of - Bryony Reeve, Gemma Smith, and Sophie Brown
with Anya of Southsea covering for a Ryde member on holiday and with Max Reeve
coxing – and they were also defeated in the semi-final.
Gemma and Sophie also raced in a composite mixed J16 crew with Ryde’s Christian
Lacey and Emiley Ladd of Newport and Ryde cox Max Reeve and they reached the
final where they lost out to Lymington
The Men’s Novice crew of - Dale Buckett, Sam Corney, Andreas Hicks and Max Reeve
with Bryony Reeve coxing - also had the misfortune to meet the eventual event
winners from Lymington, in an early round and were narrowly defeated.
