With no small boats events at Christchurch Regatta on Saturday (9th August)
and with their Hants & Dorset ARA Championship winning Junior Crew unavailable
the Wighlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club had to rely on their Men's Senior Crews
at this river based event where just two crews race side by side. The C Crew of
Ollie Bottrell. Nick Christopher, Stu Johnson, Nick Pike and cox Bryony Reeve,
racing for the first time in this format were the first in action beating Itchen
B" in the first round before loosing narrowly to the Hants & Dorset Champions
from BTC in the next round. The B crew of Mike Jenner, Matt Evans, Sam Cocker,
Dave Squibb and Cox Elena Gaskin were drawn against a very experienced Poole
Crew in the fist round where they were narrowly defeated. However the A Crew of
Ian Hayden, Matt Allsopp, Ben Ade, Adam Dracott and Cox Bryony Reeve had more
success beating Itchen A in the first round and Newport in the Semi-final, both
fairly comfortably, to face the BTC Crew in the final, where they were slightly
disappointed to loose by a couple of lengths having held them off until the
turn.
Ryde Rowing Clubs Rescheduled Regatta - Saturday, 16th August.
Following the abandonment, for the only time in its thirty year history, of Ryde
Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta on the 24th May after just one event due to the
worsening weather conditions the Club will attempt to stage the Regatta again
this Saturday, 16th August.
An revised entry of 84 crews, inevitably a little down on the original entry,
has been received from ten Rowing Clubs, including the other two Island Clubs
and from Reading R. C. from outside the Association. With a clear indication of
more than 10 late entries the final entry should approach 100 crews. This will
require a packed Programme of 18 events to be completed in just over four and a
half hours over a 1920m course from Appley Beach, near to the Ryde R. C.
Headquarters - towards Ryde Pier and return after a buoy turn. As with last year
the course has been slightly reduced as it interferes with the Harbor
entrance. Races are taking place for Senior, Junior and Novice men in coxed
fours, Senior and Junior men in coxless pairs, and Senior, Junior and Novice Men
in Single Sculls. For Ladies their is a coxless pairs event and Novice, Junior
and Senior coxed fours and a Ladies Novice Sculling event. There are also races
for Veteran A - over 40, and a double sculls race where one crew member has to
be a Novice - but where the crews can be mixed. The Regatta is scheduled to
start at 10:00am with a race every 10 to 15 minutes and the prize giving by a
representative of the Regattas main Sponsors Ward House Financial Services will
take place at the Clubhouse , in Appley Park, at around 3:00pm.
Ward House Financial Services, the well known Ryde based independent Financial
Advisers are the Regattas main sponsors with further support from a number of
local businesses - the Isle of Wight County Press, Harwoods Garage, Galnvilles
Solicitors, Secure Scaffold, Hayden Electrical, the Happy Chef, SJ Decorating,
the Simeon Arms, DIGS Michael Jenner, Provincial Builders, Vectis Insurance, the
Hope Clinic and Hovertravel. Further support comes from Wightlink, I.W. Ferries
- who are continuing their sponsorship of the Club throughout the season. The
Club also acknowledges the support and cooperation of Ryde Police, the Isle of
Wight Council and Ryde Town Council without who's assistance and support it
would not have been possible to reschedule the event.
Ryde, the host Club, have entries in all the men's Senior and Junior; the Men's
Senior and Junior Pairs and the Senior Ladies Fours all three of the men's
single sculling events as well as the double sculls. Following their good
performances at Hants & Dorset Regatta's this season the Club has high
expectations for its Men's Senior Four, the Men's Junior Four, the Men's Senior
Pairs and in the Men's Senior and Junior sculling events.
The large entry should result in some very close racing and the general public
are most welcome to view this free event - the best vantage point being from the
sea wall by the Canoe Lake.
