Coalporters Regatta, Saturday, 19th July, 2009.

Ryde Rowing Club good season continued at Southampton Coalporters Rowing Club Regatta on Saturday (19th July) with another three wins for the Wightlink sponsored Club.

Their domination of the Men’s Senior Pairs event, where they have already retained the Hants & Dorset ARA Championship won for the first time last year, continued as a new combination of Ollie Bottrell and Matt Allsopp won both heat and the final comfortably.

The Club also continues its domination of the Men’s Senior Sculls event where the Champiosnhip is already destined to go to the Club, but which Ryde Sculler will triumph is still to be decided. With current Championship leader Mike Jenner not competing it was an opportunity for Ian Hayden or Nick Pike to close the gap – and both Scullers made the final where it was Ian Hayden who took advantage of the opportunity to claim his second win of the season.

Another single sculls win came in the Men’s Junior Sculls where Tom Clark probably produced his best performance of the season so far with convincing wins in both his heat and the final to increase his lead in the Championship over his closest rival from Lymington it what is now a two horse race.

Novice sculler Florian Behrle also made his final where he finished in 3rd place – with Ryde ‘s second Novice Sculler, Callum Lowe finishing 2nd in his heat, just failing to reach the final.

Absences forced a change of crew in the Men’s Senior Four with Ollie Bottrell and Matt Allsopp joining Ian Hayden, Nick Pike and cox Bryony Reeve. They won their semi-final to take their place in the traditional twice round the course final where they finished 3rd their performance probably being effected by their previous exertions in the small boats.

The men’s Novice Four of James Scott -making his racing debut for the Club, Curtis Lowe, James Cleary and Florian Behrle with Dale Buckett coxing produced another good performance winning their heat and finishing 3rd in the final – their best result of the season so far.
