Special Award to Margaret and Harry.

A special award was made during the evening - to two of our oldest members - Margaret Hough and Club President, Harry Calloway who celebrate a total between them of one hundred and forty years as members of the Club having both joined in 1933 - seventy years ago!

Club records of the early thirties revealed the following of the first few years of their membership. In 1933, B. F. Holness was Club Captain and a young R. P. Adams, father of John, was on the committee and the balance of Club funds available after payment of all bills was £16 - which was considered to be a very favourable situation - so much so that the committee agreed to continue with the employment of a boatman at a weekly rate of £2.

Margaret gets the first mention that year - when at the Club Regatta on the 29th July, 1933 she came 2nd in a mixed sculling event rowing with Jack Turner and coxed by Ian Holness. Other mentions in the racing log for 1933 show Margaret finishing 3rd in a Ladies Swimming race on the 4th July and in August of that year being beaten in the semi-final of the Ladies Double Sculls, for the Royal Thames Yacht Club Challenge Cup,  with a Miss W. Davies as her partner and again coxed by Ian Holness.

Harry appears to have had a quieter start to his Rowing Career - with no mention in the 1933 Racing Log. But by 1934 he was a member of the Clubs "B" Crew rowing with G. Kennington, N. Woodward and R. Christmas and coxed by D. Gribble. He seems to have drifted between the Clubs "B" and "C" crews that season but by 1935 was an established member of the Ryde A Crew winning a number of Trophies with G. Scotney, R. Donn and F. Wright. In 1936 Harry was again a member of the Clubs A Crew and won many trophies including the Victor Ludoram at Ryde Regatta - where he won the Men’s Pairs, the Men’s Single Sculls was 2nd in the fixed seat fours and 2nd in the mixed pairs - his partner on this occasion being Margaret.

Both Margaret and Harry both went on to have very successful rowing careers only interrupted by the war and Harry served as Club Captain. When their rowing careers ended they both remained enthusiastic members and supporters of the Club - and to celebrate this achievement - seventy years each as members - the Club Captain, Nick Salter made a special presentation - engraved glasses -  to Margaret and Harry on behalf of the Club.
