Last Saturday (1st October) Ryde Rowing Club staged its Annual Sculling Races
sponsored by Club Member Jack Pike and his family from Appley beach, near the
Appley Park Clubhouse.
A strong field of nine Club Scullers contested the main event, a handicapped
single sculling race which was to be raced over the 1920m Ryde Regatta course.
With two to qualify from each heat for the final - it was Ian Hayden and Nick
Pike who came through the first heat. Mike Jenner and Novice sculler Harvey
Kirkby loosing out. In the 2nd heat Ben Ade and Russell Page finished in the
first two places making it an all Senior final. Joe Norman Tom Clark and Alan
Evans missing out. The final was a close contest between Ian Hayden and Nick
Pike with Ian surging through to win and Ben Ade finishing in 3rd palce and
Russell Page in 4th.
A handicapped sculling race - known as the "Junior Jacks" were also staged for
the Club Juniors - over a 800m straight course with eight Juniors contesting.
Again two heats were held with Max Reeve and Dale Buckett beating Andreas Hicks
and Ed Newnham to qualify from the first race and Charlie Norman and Bryony
Reeve qualifying from the 2nd heat beating Christian Lacey In the final Dale
Buckett stormed through the field to take the trophy with Charlie Norman in
second place, Max reeve in third and Bryony Reeve 4th.
Finally a virus training scull races was held for the Clubs new Juniors over a
straight 400m course. In the first heat Jo Groves beat Harry Campion and in the
2nd heat Dominic Douglas beat Jacob Redstone in two very close races and the
final where Joe Groves beating Dominic Douglas was also a very close race.
The Trophies were presented by Nick Pike supported by event sponsors June and
Jack Pike, in the Clubhouse after the racing.
