Junior Fun Regatta. Saturday, 14th October, 2006

Saturday, 14th October saw Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club's second Annual Junior Fun Regatta take place on Ryde Canoe Lake and at their Appley Park Clubhouse.

The Fun Regatta is aimed specifically at Juniors of fourteen years and under with limited competitive experience and includes individual and team events, indoors and outdoors, on land and on the water. The event was supported by Vestas the IW based Wind Turbine Producer, who provided prizes for the competing teams.

Disappointingly only one mainland club attended -  Itchen Imperial Rowing Club from Southampton who faced competition from two Ryde teams the A Team consisting of -  Adam Edwards, Team Captain. Ollie Gove, Sam Corney, Dale Buckett, Holly Evans and Bryony Reeve - and the B Team of -  Charlotte Brimstone, Team Captain. Josh Collyer, Max Reeve, Christian Lacey, Eleanor Gaskin and Leona Fisk     .

The first event was a team relay, in training single sculls, on the Canoe Lake, which finished with honors even - each team winning and loosing one race in the round robin contest.

The ball recovery, which involved maneuvering their single sculls to collect colored balls from buckets  floating on the lake, was won by Itchen, with Ryde B second and Ryde A third to give the Southampton Club an early lead. But Ryde A fought back to win the next event - the minimum strokes exercise where single scullers try to complete a course in the lowest of stokes - with Itchen second and Ryde B third. Ryde A also won the final Canoe Lake based event - the "Blind Rowing" - where a blindfolded sculler is guided round a course by a team member on the bank - with Itchen second and Ryde B third.

So Ryde A had a small lead as the teams returned to the Clubhouse where Itchen drew level with a fine Team performance on the indoor rowing machines, only to see Ryde A snatch the lead back by winning the Rigging contest - rigging and de-rigging a Coastal Four - where the Ryde B crew finished second.

After a close contest the prizes, including the "Gibson Goblet" for the winning Ryde Team were handed out by Ryde's three times Hants & Dorset Senior Sculling Champions - Nick Pike - who congratulated all the young competitors of their enthusiasm and competitive performances and gave a special word of thanks to the 2nd placed Itchen Imperial Rowing Club Team and their coaches for supporting the event.

Medals were awarded to all competitors and to the winners of the individual Ergo competition where Tyler Foad of Itchen came first, Charlotte Brimstone of Ryde second and Adam Edwards of Ryde third.
