Junior Inter Regionals Regatta, Saturday, 9th April, 2011.
National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham.
British Rowing’s Junior Inter-Regional Regatta is a championship contested
between the 11 British Rowing Regions, with the Thames region split into two
(Thames Upper and Thames Lower) to make 12 teams in total. Each region is
allowed one entry in to each event which are run as time trials over 2000m
course. The fastest 6 crews in each event go through to the Grande finale with
the others into the Petite Finale.
Over the years Ryde Rowing Club has had an excellent record of members of their
Junior Squad being selected for the Wessex Region Team – and this years was no
exception with no less than eight Ryde Club members – a record for any Island
Rowing Club being selected for the Regional team following extensive mainland
trials that have taken place over the last few months. Junior members of
Shanklin and Newport Rowing Clubs were also selected making a total of fifteen
Juniors form Island Clubs representing the Wessex Region and making a
significant contribution to the team.
Ryde’s successful J15 Boys Coxed Quad, of Sam Corney, Andras Hicks, Dale Buckett
and Max Reeve, who were the 2010 South Coast Champions raced as a crew and
achieved the best result of any of the Island representatives finishing 2nd in
the petite final. Ryde’s Harvey Kirkby and Charlie Norman – with Ryde Coxswain –
Ed Newnham were selected to race in a composite J14 Coxed Quad with two junior
from Shanklin (Robert Kettlety and Alex Roberston) – but could only finish 4th
in the petite final where Harvey aggravated an injury suffered in training the
previous week – which required medical attention after the race and arguably
effected their performance.
Ryde’s Jo Norman was selected for the Boys J16 Coxed Quad in a composite crew
with representatives from Shanklin (Sam Miselbach), Southampton and Itchen – and
they finished 6th in the petite final.
Ryde Rowing Club would like to acknowledge and thank Wightlink IW Ferries for
their support with the travel arrangements which not only helped get the Ryde
members to Nottingham but allowed the Club to further support the team effort by
providing a team boat and equipment.
The contribution made by the selected Juniors from the Island helped the Wessex
Region – which is the smallest in the country to achieve a reasonable result and
is a clear indication of the advance in Junior Rowing on the Island in recent
years.
