The majority of the Ryde members stayed over on the Saturday, avoiding the
expensive and time-consuming return trip to the Island in order to compete at
Lymington Rowing Clubs Regatta, staged at Milford-on-sea, which had been
postponed earlier in the season because of the rough conditions. This is a true
coastal regatta with up to nine crews abreast racing in open water and once
again the conditions were difficult and worsened during the regatta, but the
Ryde crews rose to the challenge winning three events.
The J16 crew was a composite again this time with a junior from Southsea -
Sarah Barraclough and Rydes Katie Corney coxing, but this time they went one
better winning a close race to confirm the Ryde Clubs dominance of this event
this season where they have only been beaten on one occasion.
The Mens Novice crew were determined to avenge the previous days defeat which
they did with some style coming home comfortable winners to secure a second
Novice win and promotion to Coastal junior status.
The surprise result of the day came from the composite Novice Ladies Four
where Southsea oarswomen Clare Larven stepping in on this occasion. The crew had
an excellent start and maintained their form throughout the race to win with
comparative ease the win promoting Bryony Reeve, who won with Shanklin earlier
in the years to Coastal Junior status.
The Mens Junior crew also had an excellent race beating the Hants & Dorset
Champions from Southampton but in spite of a spirited finish they finished
behind Coalporters once again in 2nd place.
With small boats back on the program Ryde had a Junior Pair of Charlie Gedling
and Joe Norman racing for the first time and they also finished in 2nd place
as did the Ryde Senior Pair of Ben Ade and Ian Hayden. Mick Jenner and Ian
Hayden also competed in the Senior Sculls with Ian withdrawing in the
difficult conditions but Micky finishing in 3rd place.
MenNov: Ryde winning Men's Novice Four at Milford Regatta - Andreas Hicks,
Dale Buckett, Sam Corney, Bryony Reeve (Cox) and Max Reeve.
