A moment of history for Ryde R. C. at Newport Regatta on
Saturday (30th July) as the Club won its first ever Hants & Dorset ARA
Championship point at Veteran Status. The Club had always believed that they
could be a threat in the Veteran status once one more of their Senior Squad hit
40 allowing them to form a qualifying crew and with Simon Saunders coming
of age this month he was able to team up with Mick Jenner, Nick Pike, Russell
Page and cox Bryony Reeve to enter the Championship status Veteran 40 event.
An early test saw them drawn against current South Coast and Hants & Dorset ARA
Champions from BTC in the heat which Ryde won comfortably only to face them
again in the final after they qualified as fastest 2nd placed crew. But if
anything the re-match was even more one-sided the Ryde crew emerging as
comfortable winners.
There was also a good performance from the Ryde Senior Crew of Ollie Bottrell,
Ben Ade, John Gedling and Ian hayden with Max Reeve coxing who knocked out
current Championship Leaders Coalporters in the heat before finishing a close
2nd to BTC in the final.
There were further good performances from the Club Novice crews the best
coming from the Mens Novice B of Charlie Gedling, Charlie Norman, Joe Norman,
Harvey Kirkby with Ed Newnham coxing who won their heat and semi-final to
claim a place in the final where they finished a close second. The Mens Novice A
Crew of - Dale Buckett, Sam Corney, Andreas Hicks and Max Reeve with Katie
Corney coxing also had a good race in the heat which they won to claim a place
in the semi-final where they just missed out.
The Ladies Novice A Crew of Bryony Reeve, Gemma Smith, Leanne Mitchell and
Sophie Brown with Max Reeve coxing continue to show improvement but failed to
make the final.
