WINTER RACING PROJECT OARSOME 500k Charity Bike Ride ROWING FEES - 2001 Agreed Squad Land Training Slots Coaching Allocations HANTS & DORSET FIXTURES - 2001 CONCEPT 2 RANKINGS BOAT MAINTENANCE All the Head races on the river we had planned to enter before Christmas were cancelled because the Rivers involved were in flood - so I have nothing to report, as yet, regarding the winter racing program. However we hope to get in two or three races before the Coastal season starts which I will report on in the next Newsletter.The Amateur Rowing Association has hi-lighted Ryde as a potential Project Oarsome Club entering into the project in January 2001. Project Oarsome is the ARAs Flagship National Junior Rowing program aimed at creating Club and School links and only a limited number of Clubs are invited to apply and it is to the Clubs credit that we have been selected. Project Oarsome could bring major benefits to the Club especially the equipment package worth around £50,000. A small Committee has been established to pursue this further - and initial contacts and discussions have been held with the ARA and the Local authority with the initial feedback being very positive. Tanzie Page, one of the Clubs most successful Oarswomen and an active Coach is flying off to Sydney soon to take part in the New South Wales 500k Charity bike ride. She is paying for all her own expenses, paying her own entry fee for the race etc. and all the money raised will go directly to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Trans North Pacific Rowing Expedition, 2001 - This is the first unsupported, double handed row across the North Pacific and involves two members of Poole Rowing Club - but with an Island connection as one of them - Tim Welford was born in East Cowes. The are due to start in May - keep an eye on their progress on their Web site at - www.pacific -odyssey.co.uk.The Club has affiliated to OAR - the Open Adaptive Rowing Association - to support its disabled/ adaptive rowing program. They will provide advice, coaching and support - and we hope run a course on Coaching the disabled for Club Coaches later in the year. Subject to the approval of the main Committee the ROWING FEES & TRANSPORT FEES for the 2001 Season (Hants & Dorset events) will be as follows:- Adults Cadets (U18) Rowing Fees - £6 £3 per Regatta. Transport in Club Minibus - £6 £3 per Regatta. The SCULL RENTAL for privately stored Sculls in the Ryde or Cowes Clubhouses - £30.00, due on the 1st March, 2001. Agreed Squad Land Training Slots.

Mayfield School - Liz Van Wyk, assisted by Chris Van Wyk. COACHING LAUNCH SLOTS at COWES. - WINTER - 2000/2001.Subject to change and further discussion. Squad/Crews/Coaches without a slot at this time should contact the Rowing Sub Committee. The following Coaching Launch Slots at Cowes have been established. While other members are welcome to train during these periods preference on use of the Launch and Boats must be give to the designated Squad/Crew/Coach. The Launch Slots will be subject to review at future Rowing Sub Committee Meetings.

Saturday, 8th September SCC, Folkstone. Closing date for the next publication of the Concept 2 British Rankings is 2nd March. As we have for the past couple of years we will hold an evening at the Clubhouse - Thursday, 22nd February, from 7.30pm - at which any active member can come along and try and set a best time - which will then be forwarded to Concept 2 for inclusion in the publication. Some of the Ergos will be in the main lounge - which will be a no smoking area for the evening. Times can be submitted for 2k, 5k and 10k, for Men and Women of all age groups. Come along and have ago - or just come and add your support. The winter boat maintenance program is well underway with the Junior senior Squad close to completing the work on "Elaine" and "Venture" and the Mens Junior Crew have nearly finished the refurbishment of "MissT". However the Mens Senior Squad, responsible for "Helen-Jane" and "Hunter", and the Ladies Squad responsible for "Dionne" need to get their act together and get their share of the work underway! CADETS - New Cadet Rep. Elected. Chris Walker was elected the Clubs Cadet representative on the General Committee following a ballot among the Clubs cadet members. So cadets - if you have a concern, or a good idea - see Chris.Keep an eye on the Club Notice Boards for more "Rowing" information - look out for information on Red Nose Day, the Oarspersons Supper and the Wightlink Ergo challenge.Steve Bull. for the Rowing Sub Committee.
