BAR STAFF NEEDED! Due to lack of support the Club Bar will be closed during the winter months on Monday and Thursday evenings -except in special circumstances (function etc..) and will open later - around 8.30pm on Tuesdays. The Club Bar is usually open on all other evenings - and on Sunday Dinner Times - from 12 Noon - although this relies on Members volunteering to Staff the Bar. In particular we are struggling to get staff for Saturday and Sunday evenings - if you can help - even with just one evening a month - or at Social functions this would be a great help to us. Contact the Bar Manager - Steph Hickman on 613077. If you intend to use the Club in the evening - especially - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday - it would be worth phoning the Club first on 562127 to make sure it is open.
MERRYDOWN SAILING RACE. Most of you will be aware that the Club runs an Annual Sailing Race from Appley Beach. The following E Mailed to the Club by Neville Hill is David Lloyd's (probably the Merrydown weekend's keenest fan) account for the yachting press. "The annual Ryde Rowing club sailing weekend was held over the weekend of September 11/12 and attracted an entry of 30 plus boats. The races are open to anyone sailing anything and are unique in that the weekend has had the same sponsor since the 1950s (MERRYDOWN CIDER) This year entries varied from a Mirror to a Tornado!!! The biggest classes were the Dart18s with ten and 5O5s with six. The course is always the same - Twice round the edge of Ryde Sands at high water of course. Saturday the course was East about with the beat against the tide and Sunday West about with the run against the tide. Competition was red hot with former 505 and prindle National Champions and the current Dart18 World Champion. Another major feature of the event is that the prizes are of course Merrydown Cider which everybody receives after racing. Prizes are given for any other reason as well as the results and the party then went on into the early hours. Sunday morning saw the annual pilgrimage to the 9 hole pitch & put golf course behind the club for the other major trophy of the weekend. ( Its the ideal way to cure the inevitable hang over from the night before and to wait for the tide to come in!!!) Next year sees the 40th continuous year of the sponsorship and an even bigger event is planned take this as your invite NOW!!! SEPTEMBER 16th/17th 2000 The Results:- Merrydown Cup (Sunday) 1st Dart18 Gareth Owen & Amanda Gadsby (Arthur Andersen) 5863 Dee S C 2nd Dart 18 David Lloyd & Sam May ( Easthams - Typhoon) 5891 Stokes Bay S C 3rd Tornado Stuart Gummer & Moira Dykes 5902 SBSC 4th Tornado Bob Crouch & John Stewart 5950 Portsmouth S C Vena Phillips Cup (Saturday) 1st Contender P Wilkinson 3777 Seaview 2nd Tornado Crouch & Stewart 3869 3rd Dart 18 Barry Hobbs & Gaye Robson 3873 SBSC 4th Dart 18 Lloyd & May 3893 PRESENTATION DINNER & DANCE. The Clubs Annual Presentation Dinner and Dance took place on Saturday, 30th October at the Ryde Theatre. Colin Eales the Captain of Southsea Rowing Club made the toast to the Club which Club Captain Ian Lennie responded to. A SUCCESSFUL SEASON! Ryde are Southcoast Junior Senior Champions! Ryde finished a successful 1999 Coastal season with a magnificent win at the Southcoast Championships Regatta. The Ryde crew of Dom Pivonka, Lee Morey, Chris Van Wyk, Mark Young (Str) and Dave Hanson (Cox) pulled off the unexpected and surprising win (unexpected and surprising to everyone but Ryde anyway!) in the Mens Junior Senior Championship Race at the Southcoast Championship Regatta - to become Junior Senior Champions of the South Coast. Selected to be the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Associations second representative crew, behind Hants & Dorset Champions - Vospers - in some what controversial circumstances they have more than justified their selection in what was a great day for the Hants & Dorset ARA who captured four of the five Championship events including the Bideford Bowl - for the Mens Senior Fours - for the first time in ten years. The Championship Regatta was scheduled to be held at Swanage on Saturday, 18th September - but was postponed after gale force winds lashed the coastal town making rowing impossible. It was only marginally better on the Sunday - so the Regatta was switched to Poole Harbor - for the Championship events only - a great disappointment for the seven crews Ryde had entered for the open events. However the weekend was salvaged by the Junior Senior Crews magnificent win - after the closest of races - with the three crews finishing within a canvas of each other and the first four crews within half a length. Indeed as the race ended no one seemed to know who had won - with the commentator originally believing Bideford Blues had won with Ryde back in third. After an agonizing wait the official verdict came through - Ryde by less than a canvas from Shoreham, with Bideford Blues third and Vospers - Hants & Dorset Champions in fourth. The win was all the more remarkable for the fact that the Ryde three mans seat had disintegrated after half the course and he had completed the race with only half the wheels on his seat! Hants & Dorset Regattas. The Junior Senior crew won three times - at Southampton Town, Bournemouth and Milford and also recorded seven second places. The Mens Junior A Crew of Gary Ranson, Richard Adams, Chris Jenkins and Gary Walters and coxed by Ashley Maitland also won during the season - at Worthing Regatta - to gain promotion to Junior senior status for next season - and they also had three second places and were the favourites for the Open event, had it been held at the Southcoast championships. There were two mens Novice wins - one at Worthing - with a J16 crew of Matt Coggins, Ben Ade, Matt Allsopp, Steve Salter, and cox Sam Billington - went on to compete well in the Junior status. The second win came at our own Regatta - with an even younger crew - J15 - consisting Chris Walker, Sean Dubois, Lee Bennett and Matt Bull, coxed by Ashley Maitland. We also had two Ladies Novice wins - at Poole and Vosper The winning crew was Louise Austin, Jo Cleaver, Hannha Firth and Anna Bateman, coxed by Kathryn Arnold. As a result of these point wins - Ryde were runners-up for the Hants & Dorset Junior Senior Championships and the Ladies Novice Championships and were third in the Mens Junior Championship and Mens Novice Championship. The Clubs two Cadet wins also made us the Hants & Dorset ARAs Unofficial Cadet Champions for the third year in succession. With the Silver and Bronze medals won at the National Championships and reported in the last Rowing Update you can see this was one of our most successful seasons for several years. We have already started the winter racing program - back into the River Boats - and competing inland in a variety of boats and sections from Junior through to Veteran. More news in the next Rowing Update.
WINTER LAND TRAINING. Organized Winter land Training is underway at the Ryde High School Gymnasium - on Thursday evenings. The sessions start promptly at 7.00pm, last for an hour and cost £1 a session. Be there for 6.45pm to be ready to start at 7.00 - all are welcome. Contact Nick Salter on 614454 for more details. BOAT MAINTENANCE. Boat maintenance - on the Coastal Fleet is also underway and Squads will be contacted by their Coaches to advise them of times, dates and work required. Please respond when asked - the sooner the work is complete the better. The session and work allocation is being coordinated by Chris Jenkins - telephone number 01983 563085 - he would be delighted to hear from any volunteers! NEW EQUIPMENT. The Club has now purchased a much needed new engine for the Coaching /Safety launch - thanks in part to a legacy from the late David Plumbley. Work on the New "plastic" coastal four continues - and we hope this will be completed soon after Christmas and well in time for the new season. Finally the insurance payout on the "written-off" double scull is due any time which should allow its replacement and we have purchased a second hand coastal scull for general Club use.
