Ryde R.C. NEWSThe Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight, PO33 1ND Telephone: 01983 562127 News for Members and Friends of Ryde Rowing ClubAugust 2002
Dear Member
With the traditional ‘English Summer’ well under way this is an ideal time to bring you up to date with what has been happening since our last Newsletter, and what will be happening in the coming months.
In the previous newsletter I gave the names of the Main Committee elected at the AGM. I also informed you that there were two positions not filled, one on the general committee and Assistant Secretary. I am pleased to say that these positions have now been taken up, and the full list of members is below :
Captain Nick Salter Committee John Adams Vice/Rowing Captain Steve Titmus April Briscoe Secretary Peter Hewison Steph Hickman Ass’t. Secretary Anna Bateman Jackie Tottis Treasurer Steve Dear Steve Bull Bar Manager Steph Hickman Chris Aiken Cadet Representative Stuart Johnson Ian Lennie
In addition to his position on the Main Committee, Ian Lennie has also taken on the role of Bar Committee Chairman. There are also vacancies on this committee.
MEMBERS, if you are active and would be interested in fulfilling any of these roles, now or in the future, please speak to one of the current Officers or Committee, they would be pleased to hear from you.
The Financial AGM was held at the Clubhouse on Friday 22nd February. Unfortunately the attendance was, as usual, very poor. This is a great pity for it is your opportunity to see how your subscriptions are spent and have your say. It cannot be stressed too often - it’s YOUR Club. I can however inform the membership that the Club finances are in a very healthy position.
BAR and SOCIAL MATTERS. The clubhouse continues to see an increase in the number of bookings for members and private parties, all of which make a valuable contribution to club finances. If you are thinking of holding a party or know someone who is, why not use YOUR Rowing Club? Contact Steph Hickman on 613077 for further details. Steph would be very pleased to hear from anyone, who is not already doing so, willing to undertake a bar duty. A few more volunteers would make her headache go away.
The Club celebrated its 125th Anniversary on Saturday 29th June at the Clubhouse with a live band and buffet. Approximately 100 attended, all of whom had an enjoyable evening. Our thanks go to Steve and Helen Dear, and John and Val Adams for all their hard work.
The 150 Club continues to be a great success under the guiding hand of Ian Lennie, and he informs us that his calendar will recommence after the summer months. Keep checking the notice board for dates etc.
The following is a list of events that have been arranged so far : Saturday 10th August Members Wedding Reception Saturday 24th August Members Birthday Party Saturday/Sunday 7th/8th September Merrydown Sailing Weekend Saturday 21st September Members Birthday Party
This years Annual Awards Presentation Evening will be on Saturday 2nd November at The Ryde Theatre. At this time the precise cost is not known, but if there is to be an increase from the past two years, it will needless to say be kept to a minimum. Further details will be notified as and when known, certainly within the next few weeks. In the meantime enter the date in your diaries and make every effort to attend this important event in the Club’s calendar.
Ryde Rowing Club are pleased to announce Wightlink have renewed their sponsorship for a further year until May 2003. I am sure we are all aware of how important this is to the Club and I hope we will all make every effort whenever we can to promote and use Wightlink.
The following two items are more fully detailed in the Rowing round-up.
- Ryde Rowing Club has been successful in attracting an Awards for All grant of £4,096 for Coach development and a new training boat, Ergo and Safety Boat Trailer. - Ryde Rowing Club Are pleased to announce a new sponsorship agreement with Carisbrooke Shipping Limited and Medina Shipping Limited. This has attracted Sportsmatch funding and the combined total will enable the Club to purchase two new boats and related equipment.
I’m sure we are all very grateful for this support, and our thanks to the organisations concerned.
We have had a great many questions regarding the rise (two storeys) of Appley Café and consequently our blocked view. I have to tell the membership that the Club did register an objection and that planning was initially turned down locally. However, this rejection was overturned on appeal and hence the view before us. It is something we now have to live with.
Don’t forget that the minibus can be made available for members use in return for a donation. See Nick Salter for further details.
Further social events will hopefully be arranged throughout the year and details will be placed on the notice board as and when. However, should any member have an idea for something different, please see any committee member to discuss it.
The Club Website address has changed to – www.ryderowingclub.co.uk, where all the latest news can be found.
Can I remind members that Annual Subscriptions were due on 1st March and anyone who has not paid by the end of August will cease to be a member. A reminder is enclosed to all those on our records as outstanding. Should we have made a mistake and be demanding money erroneously, our apologies.
The following is an appeal from Steph’ Hickman and the Committee to the membership. Steph as we all know works in JUST in Ryde High Street and in the past members have always gone into the shop to see her about any matter of Club business. This is now becoming an embarrassment for her and in some cases for the member concerned. Can I remind the membership that this is her place of employment. Would you please always direct all enquiries etc to her home number – 613077. She will be pleased to talk to you there.
Finally, on behalf of the Officers and Committee of Ryde Rowing Club wish you a good summer (whatever’s left) and say that we hope to see you at the Club soon.
Kind regards,
Peter Hewison ROWING Update. The Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 1ND. Tel: 01983 562127 . AUGUST, 2002. NEWS FOR ROWING MEMBERS - FROM THE ROWING SUB COMMITTEE.NEW BOAT SPONSORSHIP FOR RYDE ROWING CLUB. As part of the Ryde Rowing Club’s ongoing development plans we are pleased to be able to announce new sponsorship agreements with Cowes based Carisbrooke Shipping Limited and Medina Shipping Limited. This new sponsorship agreement has attracted Sportsmatch funding that will enable the Club to purchase two new boats and related equipment. The Club is purchasing a lightweight Coastal Coxed Four and a River Bow Coxed Four/Coxed Quad convertible, along with the appropriate oars and sculls together with a sound system for the River Four. This will allow the Club to increase participation across the age range and give us greater flexibility, particularly with the dual role of the Riverboat. Carisbrooke Shipping was founded in 1969 and operates a fleet of some 30 general-purpose ships between 2,500 tons and 20,000 tons, trading world-wide from their Island base. Medina Shipping is an offshoot of Carisbrooke Shipping in partnership with Damen Shipyards in the Netherlands; they own 2 ships, which are operated in the Carisbrooke Shipping fleet. The company encourages young people by way of their Cadet Training Programme but also at local level, preferably with sports, hence their decision to help Ryde Rowing Club with their requirements for the two new boats. Sportsmatch is a business sponsorship incentive scheme that is administered in England by the Institute of Sports Sponsorship on behalf of the government and Sport England. It aims to provide a much-needed boost to gross roots sports and physical recreation throughout Great Britain. Sportsmatch provides £ for £ matching of a sponsor’s contribution, providing the sponsorship is new or represents increased involvement. It enables grass roots sponsorship to take place that might not otherwise have been affordable by sponsors. Since its foundation in 1992 more than £50 million of new sponsorship money has gone directly into sport coming equally from the Sportsmatch scheme and commercial sponsors. Please keep an eye on the Club notice boards & Web site for details of the naming and launching ceremony for these new boats. AWARDS FOR ALL GRANT. The Club is also pleased to announce that the Awards for All Committee, which provides grants to local voluntary organizations and community groups from Lottery funding has granted an award to the Club of £4,906. The grant has been awarded to fund Amateur Rowing Association Instructors Award courses, RYA2 Power Boat users courses, St. Johns Life Saver courses, a road trailer for our Coaching/Safety launch, a Virus training Scull and a Concept2 Indoor Rower - with the boat trailer and training scull already received and in use. REMAINING FIXTURES - 2002. Saturday, 17th Aug. MILFORD Saturday, 24th Aug. BTC Saturday, 31st Aug. ITCHEN Sunday, 1st Sept. H&D Row-offs.Saturday, 7th Sept. Coalporters Junior. Saturday, 14th Sept. South Coast Championships, Torbay. (WEARA). NOTE: Worthing Regatta - after two attempts to stage it has now been cancelled. The winter racing programme will be established over the next few months. We also hope to stage a couple of Club events at Appley before the end of the season - the Jack Pike Sculls - and the Yelfs Marathon - which will probably a names in the hat event! Keep an eye on the Rowing Notice boards for more information. As usual a crew of "veteran" Ladies will be competing in the Great River Race, on the 7th September. This is a race for traditional boats - no sliding seats or outriggers - on the Thames - 22 miles from Richmond Greenwich. The Ryde crew will be "racing" in a Solent galley owned by Club Vice President Pat Sherwin, MBE. HANTS & DORSET SEASON. So far it has been a slightly frustrating Hants & Dorset season with a string of second and third places but few wins. However the Senior crew won at Southsea, winning the magnificent Portsmouth Grand Challenge Cup and we have had three Novice Mens wins - with more to come. We have also won two cadet races. The Senior Men, Junior Senior Men, Junior Men and Junior Ladies have all had second places as have Junior scullers Mick Jenner and Ashley Maitland. At the National Championships, in Nottingham the Club won a Silver medal in the Men’s Coastal coxed Four and a Bronze medal in the Men’s Coastal coxless pairs and the J18 crew reached their final - the first Ryde (and Island) crew to reach the final of a Junior River event at the nationals. The return trip from the Nationals was eventful - with a full Club Minibus, towing a full trailer losing its clutch at Cherwell Service Station near Oxford - over 100 miles from home! Our thanks to Southsea Rowing Club (Rob and Shara) and Club members Ian Walker and Ian Lennie for forming the rescue party. ROWING FEES 2002. Revised, May 2002.* With WIGHTlink renewing their sponsorship, we have been able to keep the fees the same as last year - i.e.: FOR RIVER EVENTS - Adults will pay £8 and cadets will pay the seat fee up to a maximum of £8. FOR COASTAL EVENTS - Adults will pay £6 and cadets £3. Transport in the Minibus - adults £6 Cadets - £3.* Definition of Cadet for Rowing Fees will be roughly in line with the ARA J18 rule as follows - You will pay the Cadet rate if you are under 18 on the 1st September in the current school year unless in full time employment. NEW KIT. A new supplier of racing kit is now in use - one piece at £35, Vests at £18 to £20, long sleeved plain white tops - £24. We expect to be placing an order for rowing tops, cost £50.00 within the next few weeks. See Nick Salter to view samples and order. The old cotton racing vests are also available at £8.50. Development. The Stelph Coastal Boat - this remains a disappointment with no progress to date - "Stelph" have allegedly been very busy and have not yet been able to start on the Coastal Boat from our mould. As a result they have missed out on the opportunity we have had to purchase two new boats - the orders being placed with established suppliers. Project Oarsome - The Club has declined the opportunity to apply to the ARA to join Project Oarsome. The commitment required, the funding and support from local schools was not strong enough although as a result of our exploring the possibilities a potentially useful contact was made with Bishop Lovett School where we are pursuing a formal link. COACH DEVELOPMENT. The Club will host an ARA IA course in the Autumn - over the weekends of 28th/29th September and 5th/6th October - for the Wessex Regional Rowing Council - so this will be an excellent opportunity for any member wishing to take a coaching qualification. The Club has funding available to meet the majority of the cost (£120) - for four or five members - who will only have to pay around £20 plus their ARA membership. Anyone interested should contact Steve Bull (566481/ steve@scbull.freeserve.co.uk) as soon as possible. A St. John Ambulance "Life Saver Course is planned for the Autumn - which will also be subsidized - again names to Steve Bull. An RYA2 Launch users course has been held, with thanks to Ryde Inshore Rescue, with six Club Coaches gaining the award - Alan Evans, Becky Young, Chris Aiken, Tanzie Page, Pip Hersey and Steve Titmus. Fundraising. The 100,000m Team Ergo organized by the Seniors and held at the Clubhouse - during the day before the Oars persons supper - has raised around £300 for new Equipment and the Sponsored Ergo row on the Wightlink Car Ferry has contributed £220 towards the Wightlink and IW Radio Charity Minibus Appeal. Outstanding sponsorship for both should be paid to Steve Bull as soon as possible.FOR MORE INFORMATION CHECK OUT THE CLUB WEB SITE ON www.ryderowingclub.co.uk (note new Web site address) For information on the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association check out their web site on - www.hdara.co.uk Steve Bull - for the Rowing Sub Committee.
