Once again Ryde Rowing Club Regatta, held in May was a great success. Although entries were slightly down on last year the weather was kind enabling crews and spectators to have an enjoyable day. Ryde regatta has the reputation for being one of the best along the south coast. Our thanks go to all the volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the day is a success. (Unfortunately some, the Catering Crew especially, are getting a bit long in the tooth, so next year we will be touting for a few more willing recruits!).

The Rowing season is now in full swing and as mentioned in the rowing update there have been some very creditable performances from our rowers. There is no doubt that early in the season the Club missed the large contingent of rowers who were away at Uni. Many having returned for the summer (as can be witnessed at their training camp: Weatherspoons!) will be competing during the latter part of the season.

It is good to see a large group of young rowers in training and starting out in the sport. As yet they have not begun to row competitively; needing to gain a little in confidence. There is certainly no lack of enthusiasm and next season is looking promising. Our thanks go to the coaches who give of their time and knowledge so freely.

Our Adaptive Rowers continue to meet on Friday evenings, enjoying using the training facilities and meeting socially in the lounge bar joined by their family and friends.

A reminder for those “strolling in the park” the lounge bars are open Wednesday & Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtime: drop by for a drink; we are always pleased to see you.

It is with deep regret that we have to record the passing of Richard Dawson. Richard rowed for the Club and was a member for many years. He was a former valued committee member and bar manager. Our sympathy is extended to his wife Becky and to his family. We thank them for a generous legacy the Club has received from Richard’s estate which, in line with his wishes, will be used to purchase equipment for the Club

NEW BALCONY PROJECT

Following approval given at this years AGM the Committee is actively pursuing plans to build an additional balcony extension to the eastern aspect of the clubhouse opening up views across Appley Park.

This initially has been made possible by a gift of monies from a very generous benefactor, to whom we are indebted. However this will be an expensive long term project and the club is therefore looking for additional donations. If any member feels able to contribute in any way however small we would be very grateful

The Inland Revenue has recently granted the club Community Amateur Sports Club status and as a result we will, with the permission of the donor, be able to reclaim tax on any donations made. We will now also receive 80% mandatory rate relief from the local authority.

On behalf of the Committee and Members of Ryde Rowing Club, I extend grateful thanks to WIGHTlink for their continued sponsorship. The importance of their generous support, in enabling our rowers to compete fully at regattas throughout the south coast and beyond, should not be underestimated.

ROWING Update.

The Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 1ND. Tel: 01983 562127. JULY, 2004. NEWS FOR ROWING MEMBERS - FROM THE ROWING SUB COMMITTEE.

2004 H&D SEASON so far.......With so many of last years active members away at University during the first part of the season and the remaining Coastal Juniors unable to get their act together - we are relying on our Senior Squad to represent the Club plus young Ben Churchill sculling - and winning Novice Sculls at Shanklin. The Seniors are competing in the four, in the Coxless Pair and at Senior, Junior and Novice Sculls - with some success having won the fours at Worthing - and Nick Pike picking up four Senior Sculls wins and Matt Allsopp one so far at Junior Sculls. The Uni. students returned for the IW Regattas - and we boated a number of other crews - and picked up some 2nd and 3rd places. It is hoped that these crews will soon be competing again as they return for the summer. Ben Churchill has also represented the Club and the Wessex Region in the Inter Regionals producing a very creditable performance. He was also invited to and attended the National Junior Sculling camp. The Club Juniors competed in the Wessex Junior Regatta at Bryanston and have attended training days at Coalporters and Canford. RYDE REGATTA - 2004. 22nd May, 2003.sponsored by Ward House Financial Services. An excellent Club Regatta was held on the 22nd May - our thanks to all those who helped and the sponsors. The Regatta itself has made a small loss - thanks to the IW Council cutting the grant back to £150 from £500 - but Bar and Refreshment sales have insured a reasonable profit for the Club

WIGHTLINK CONTINUE SPONSORSHIP. The Committee of Ryde Rowing Club are very pleased to announce that WIGHTlink have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the Club for the 2004 Season. We are WIGHTlink’s oldest and longest running sports sponsorship - and I am sure our members - and in particular the active members - appreciate how important it is to us. Members should therefore take every opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous support that WIGHTlink give us, to use their Services when ever possible and to avoid doing anything that might embarrass the Club or its main sponsor.

Rowing Community Sports Coach.

Ryde Rowing Club has joined with three other Rowing Clubs based in Southampton - Itchen Imperial, Coalporters and Southampton - to appoint a Rowing Community Sports Coach. These four Clubs have successful Junior sections and are all Amateur Rowing Association "Go-Row" accredited Clubs approved to run the National Junior Rowing programme. The Community Sports Coach Scheme (CSCS) is a scheme being delivered and is partly funded by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Sport England and the County Sports Partnerships and is aimed at establishing paid, qualified Community Sports Coaches who will be working at a local level over a number of sports.

The coach will not only contribute to enhancing the quality of the Clubs existing activity, but will also provide the opportunity to generate substantial new activity over time, working to maximise the number of young people who will benefit. Employed on a full time basis for a period of three years, the Coach Rachel Redhead - who some of you have already met started work on the 13th May. Her position is being managed and administered by the ARA. Rachel is a twenty-one year old graduate from Sheffield Hallam University where she gained a BSc (Honours) in Recreation Management - and is a qualified ARA Rowing Coach who has worked part time for the ARA on a number of occasions.

For the Ryde Club she will primarily focus on Club School links and the Club has received an enthusiastic response from the targeted Middle schools - Bishop Lovett and Mayfield and from Ryde High School. The hope is to be able to deliver dry rowing sessions within schools (on indoor rowing machines) which will encourage children to try the wet sessions, on the water, at the club. Rachel will also benefit the Ryde Club and community by enabling the club to take their development work a step further by providing a resource to support the existing club volunteer coaches; to mentor the club and school volunteer coaches to enable them to build a lasting coach structure; deliver sessions alongside club or school coaches in order to share knowledge and create a sustainable legacy and links will also be formed or strengthened with other groups in the community such as youth groups, crime diversion schemes, health schemes and people with disabilities, single mums etc. Rachel will be operating at all levels from complete beginner to the Clubs competitive Junior Squad.

Ryde Rowing Club Gain Sport England Clubmark Status.

Ryde Rowing Club has become the first Rowing Club in the Wessex Region, and one of the first in the Country to gain Sport England Clubmark status. The Sport England Clubmark scheme - a National cross sport quality mark- - has been developed to enable children and young people, their parents and carers and others with interest in sport to recognise - across a range of different sports - clubs that are committed to providing a quality experience. The award of Clubmark status recognises and accredits Clubs that are committed to providing a safe, effective and child friendly environment for children and young people and is an integral part of the Amateur Rowing Association, the sports governing body, own development work with sports clubs. It sets standards to which Clubs should aspire and sets criteria which must be met and are inspected for in the following categories - duty of care and child protection, coaching and competition, sports equity and ethics and Club management.

Clubmark status will benefit the Club by promoting the Club, gaining support from sport professionals, increasing membership, and developing their coaches and volunteers.

Clubmark supersedes and expands on the Clubs NJRP (National Junior Rowing Programme) accreditation gained in 1999 and reaffirms the Clubs commitment to the development of Junior rowing.

Possible Order for RRC Splash Tops.

Are any members interested in ordering the RRC Splash Top in time for the 2004 season? See notice on Notice Board in Clubhouse. The minimum order is six and we have four interested.

Boat & Minibus Storage

The Club has a storage problem - we have a couple of boats - a Coastal Four and a sectional eight that we need to find some storage space for. Can anyone store them for us - they are around thirty foot long! We will also probably need to find some where new to park the Minibus as we expect its current location may not be available for much longer. Anyone any ideas?
