News for Members and Friends of Ryde Rowing Club February 2005

HARRY CALLOWAY

It is with deep sadness that we record the passing of Club President Harry Calloway. Having joined the Club in 1933, Harry was one of our longest serving members; rowing competitively over many years and winning countless trophies including the Victor Ludorum at Ryde Regatta in 1936 where he took first place in both the Men’s Pairs & Single Skulls and second in the Fixed Seat Fours & Mixed Pairs. Having served as Club Captain, he retired from active rowing but remained a fervent and supportive member. Taking a keen interest in Club activities he was often seen cheering on our more junior crews at mainland regattas and remained an enthusiastic and regular supporter of Club social activities. He was elected Club President in 1999, a position he undertook with both pride and his usual enthusiasm and good humour. He will be greatly missed by Club members young and old.

Our sympathy is extended to his family and many friends.

Ryde Rowing Club’s Annual Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta, sponsored by:   Ward House Financial Services,

takes place from the Appley Clubhouse on Sunday 5th June – with an earlier than usual start of 9.15 am. There will be a four and a half hour programme of 18 races across four statuses involving Men & Women, racing in Coxed Fours, Coxless Pairs and Single Skulls over a 1920 metre course from Appley Beach out towards Ryde Pier and return. The Club is grateful for the additional support being provided by

REGATTA SMALL ADDS ?

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta is attended by over 700 competitors and spectators. In addition to the main event sponsors, the Club is giving an opportunity for members & friends who may have their own business to place a small add in the Regatta Programme. The advertisements, measuring about 2” x 1”, will be simple in format with no pictures or complicated graphics, have a maximum of 20 words and located in the inside pages of the Regatta Programme. In addition the advertiser will receive publicity throughout the day over the Regatta PA system, have a mention on the Regatta interactive display in the Clubhouse with enlarged versions of the advert also on display. In exchange we are hoping that advertisers would be prepared to contribute £20 to the Regatta Fund.

CLUBHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS

Work is now well underway with the construction of the New Balcony

extension to the eastern aspect of the clubhouse opening up views across Appley Park. It is hoped that completion will be in the late spring.

This will be an invaluable addition to Club facilities. Our grateful thanks have been extended to a very generous benefactor to whom the Club is sincerely indebted and to Club members for their additional donations. Thanks to this generosity the project will be entirely funded with the Club having to incur no additional debt.

Following a recent committee meeting the decision has been made to install a new and much improved ventilation system in the main clubhouse bar. This will greatly improve the comfort of both members and visitors

Have you an old mobile phone lurking in the depths of a cupboard that could be raising funds for the Club whilst also helping the environment. “Green Phones” collect mobile phones and redistribute to developing counties or where possible reuse many of the components. A collection box for mobile phones, complete if possible with their chargers, is situated behind the Clubhouse bar. Spread the word to family & friends to earn the Club extra revenue

ROWING Update.

The Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 1ND. Tel: 01983 562127. FEBRUARY, 2005. NEWS FOR ROWING MEMBERS - FROM THE ROWING SUB COMMITTEE.

WINTER ACTIVITIES.

Since the end of the 2004 Hants & Dorset Season the Club has competed in a number of winter Head Races - in Southampton and further afield in Oxford - and picked up a few head pennants. The Junior section has also been actively involved in Wessex Regional Rowing Council Junior activities - training days and selection trials for the Wessex team for the Junior Inter Regionals at Nottingham in April. Rachael Redhead, our Rowing Community Sports Coach has also been very active having set up two school links with Mayfield and Bishop Lovett C of E Middle Schools that has bought in a number of new members. Supported for the crossing by WIGHTlink she is on the Island most Mondays - taking an after school club for the Mayfield and Bishop Lovett students, based at the Club - and then a session for some of the existing Club Juniors. The frustration with this project has been the rejected grant applications for vital indoor rowers for the schools - Rachael having to rely on the Clubs own equipment at the moment. The rejected application are all the more frustrating as Southampton based schools have been successful with similar applications.

ROWING MEETING AND WORK DAY.

A meeting of all active Oarsmen/Women, intending to compete this season will take place on SUNDAY, 6th MARCH at 9.30am at the Clubhouse. This will be followed by a work session around the Clubhouse to tidy-up the boathouse and training area before the start of the new season. All active oarsman/women are expected to attend. Also please note that the Clubs General Committee have expressed their concern about the way the boathouse/training area and changing rooms are left on occasions. Please ensure you put away the weights after use - and throw your rubbish - empty cups, drinking bottles etc.. in the appropriate bins and keep the changing rooms tidy.

Capsize Drill & Swim Test.

SUNDAY, 27th FEBRUARY. 5.00pm to 8.00pm. At the WATERSIDE POOL by the Canoe Lake. MEET AT CLUB AT 5.00pm for BRIEFING. ANY ROWING/CADET MEMBER WHO HAS NOT CARRIED OUT THE

CAPSIZE DRILL & SWIM TEST

SHOULD ATTEND. If you have completed the test and would like to do the test again you are welcome to attend but priority will be given to those who have NOT completed the test.

Test will be undertaken in Rowing Kit.

Late entries. Late entry of £5.50 per seat will be paid for by the crew. Doubling-up. Individuals or crews who want to "double-up", as opposed to being requested or directed to "double-up", will make a contribution of £3 towards each additional entry fee. i.e. individuals or crews are entitled to an entry in one event as part of their rowing fee but have to make a contribution to any additional races they wish to enter. Mixed/Charity races - paid for by the competing crew. Rowing fees will be charged at all Regatta's except Ryde, Minibus transport is charged at all Regattas except Ryde, Shanklin and Newport. As agreed at the Rowing Subcommittee Meeting of 30/1/2005.

NEW BOAT TRAILER.

The Rowing Sub Committee is pleased to be able to advise the members that we have ordered a new boat trailer to replace our existing ageing and fast deteriorating unit. The new Trailer, supplied by specialist builders Arthur deGraff should be with us by the end of February. It is a lighter unit, which will be easier to handle and load/unload - but capable of carrying more boats (up to six fours as well as three single sculls) and meets the latest legal and safety requirements. The unit has adjustable racks, a lockable front box, bicycle rack and security devices. We are indebted to Becky Dawson and to the memory of her late husband, former club oarsman, Richard in who’s memory she made a substantial donation - and to those Club members who have made donations to the project. - and to the Clubs Committee who agreed the balance of the funding - the trailer costing just short of £5,000. In total.

The Club is also seeking grant aid towards some additional sculling boats - fine and training - which we hope to be able to purchase later in the year.

CLUB KIT.

It is hoped to have items of Club Kit on display at the Rowers Meeting when orders will be take - splash tops, Racing Vests, one-piece etc.. New members intending to compete are reminded that as a minimum they must purchase a Club Racing Singlet - which cost £18. We hope to generate enough interest to order Club splash tops (minimum order six) which cost around £60.

CLUB REGATTA. SUNDAY 5th JUNE.

The Club Regatta takes place a little later than usual this year - on SUNDAY, 5th JUNE - and has an early start - around 9.15am. This will make setting-up the Regatta even more critical - and as usual much of the setting-up will take place on the Friday before - 3rd June. So if you can free-up some time on that day to help it would be most appreciated.
