Another successful Coastal Season has been completed- with Ryde Rowing Club crews in attendance at all fourteen Regattas and the South Coast Championships at Dartmouth.

The Club achieved one Hants & Dorset Championship, two runner-up positions, one 3rd place and a total of 31 championship wins, plus a number of wins in the non-championship events.  Although we only won one actual Championship the 31 points won across all Championship events made the Club the second most successful Club in the Hants & Dorset behind Itchen Imperial. R.C.

Our congratulations go to Nick Pike who secured a 3rd successive Men’s Senior Sculls Championship with a dominating performance, winning twelve of the thirteen races.  He was often chased home by Ryde's other Senior Scullers - Matt Allsopp and Mike Jenner, who along with Ian Hayden and cox Penny Glazzard also formed the Senior A Crew, winning five Senior Races.  This, along with the point won by the B Crew of - Christy & Con Sullivan, Steve Salter, Ollie Bottrell and cox Clare Salter, gave the Club the runners-up slot for the Championship and South Coast representative honours for the A Crew.

The Men's Junior Senior Squad of Adam Drockett, Sam Cocker, Dave Squibb, Ben Churchill & Matt Evans with coxswains Penny Glazzard & Jodie Cocker were involved in the closest H&D Championship, finishing as runners-up with four points to Itchen with five.  Southsea also had four points with Ryde taking the runners-up slot and South Coast representative honours after beating them in a row-off.  Two Ryde Junior Ladies crews won during the season - the A crew of Aimee Dibben, Hayley Edwards, Kim Salter, Rachael Brimstone and cox Adam Edwards winning twice and the B crew of Sophie Draper, Claire Salter, Chloe Attrill and Steph Goody also collecting a win giving them 3rd place in their Championship.  Two wins for the Men's Novice crew of Jamie Lawson, Ian Dyer, Tom Clark & James Eklund with cox Bryony Reeve gained them promotion to Coastal Junior status and Ben Ade's two wins in the Novice Sculls takes him to junior status in this discipline.

The Club maintained its fine record at the South Coast Rowing Championships where two representative crews in the Men's Senior and Junior Senior Fours both finished second and as top Hants & Dorset representative crews.  Wins for the Men's Senior B and the Ladies Junior A, as well as a second place for the Ladies Junior B in the invitation events, secured the Club the superb aggregate trophy which is now on display in the back bar.  This overall performance give them the Archie Fraser Trophy for the best performing Hants & Dorset Club in all events at the South Coast Championships Regatta for the 2nd year in succession.

Congratulations are extended to all rowers, coxes and their respective coaches.

The RRC Annual Dinner & Prize giving was recently held at the Hotel Ryde Castle Club with 70 members & their guests enjoying the evening.  Unfortunately this year we were unable to secure a guest speaker however this appeared not to detract from the success of the evening and Mrs Marion Lennie, wife of Club President Mr Ian Lennie, made the awards presentation.

48th ANNUAL MERRYDOWN SAILING REGATTA

With the predicted highest tides of the year and a force 6 easterly kicking the Solent into a very nasty state, Ryde Rowing Club hosted its annual sailing weekend sponsored by Merrydown Cider for the 48th year.  This must surely be the longest continuous sponsorship of any sporting event.

Hotly contested racing took place in the Solent between crews from Gurnard, Yaverland, Brading Haven & Stokes Bay Sailing Clubs with Saturday seeing eleven catamarans’s battling strong tides, winds and the resulting lumpy sea conditions. After 60 minutes of difficult and uncomfortable sailing first over the line was the F18 Capricorn of Gummer from Stokes Bay winning the Vera Phillips Perpetual Challenge Cup on handicap, with the F18 Hobbie Tiger of Wright from Stokes Bay and the Hurricane 5.9 of Crank from Gurnard Sailing Club 2nd & 3rd respectively

It was a rarely seen sight that met spectators on the Sunday, when with a moderating easterly wind, a mixed fleet of twenty boats crossed the starting just off Ryde Seafront to race for the prestigious Merrydown Rose Bowl.  After a tightly contested race, first over the line was again the F18 Capricorn of Gummer  from Brading, winning the Merrydown Rose Bowl perpetual Challenge Trophy on handicap with the 505 of Newlyn from Stokes Bay second and the Radial Laser of Gordon, also from Stokes Bay, third.

The weekend aggregate trophy; The Merrydown Barrel, was also won by Gummer who really mastered the difficult conditions with his F18 Capricorn, a Formula 1 of the sailing world!

The prize giving took place at the Clubhouse with David Wheeler, who last organised the event in 1982, presenting the prizes.

Thanks were expressed to all competitors for supporting the event, Merrydown for their continued sponsorship, Steph Hickman & Steve & Josie Ball for their assistance on the day, Petra Saunders for providing safety cover and special thanks extended to Mike Hayles for all his hard work and efforts in organising the entire weekend.

We look forward to the 49th running of this event over the weekend of 15th/16th September 2007
