News for Members and Friends of Ryde Rowing Club

October  2002

Dear Member,

With the summer now well behind us this is an ideal time to bring you up to date with what has been happening since our last Newsletter, and what will be happening in the coming months.

Enclosed with this newsletter is a resume of all that has been happening on the water during the Summer months.

On Sunday 19th October, Ryde Rowing Club held a naming ceremony for the two boats provided through sponsorship by Carisbrooke Shipping and Damen Shipyards of Holland and Sportsmatch.

A good number of members were present to witness the blessing of the boats by the Rev. Nick Scott, the Club Chaplain, and we were most pleased to welcome representatives of both Carisbrooke Shipping and Damen Shipyards, as well as the Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, Miss Heather Humby.

I am sure it will be of no surprise that the names of the boats are – CARISBROOKE and DAMEN.

TWO NEW BOATS NAMED.

The Clubs named its two new boats on Sunday, 20th October but were unable to "launch" them due to the unfavourable weather conditions. The boats were named, by representatives of our sponsors, in front of many of our members and honoured guests including Willam Wester, the Managing Director of sponsors Carisbrooke Shipping and his wife and Arie Timmerman from sponsors the Damen Shipyards and his wife who travelled from the Netherlands for the Ceremony. Their sponsorship received matching funding from Sportsmatch which allowed the Club to purchase a lightweight Coastal Coxed Four, named "Damen" and a River Bow Coxed Four/Coxed Quad convertible, named Carisbrooke - along with the appropriate oars and sculls together with a sound system for the River Four. .

South Coast Championships 2002

A Great day for Club at 2002 South Coast Championships - which should have been held at Paignton, Torbay on Saturday, 14th September - but was switched to Dartmouth on Sunday 15th because of the usual awful weather. The Men's Junior Championship crew - - would have finished 5th, maybe 4th in not swamped by the rescue launch and forced to retire. Very creditable performance from a crew who were still Novice at the beginning of the season. Men's Senior A in the Open - won with comparative ease - after the traditional re-row that all Ryde Senior Crews seem to have to go through to win a South Coast event (they won the first race as well)! Men's Junior Senior's in the open - won a close race with the main challenge coming from the holders Shanklin to put behind them the disappointment of not winning the row-off for a Championship place. Fitting that Chris Walker should be in the first crew to win in the "Blue Boat". Junior ladies in the open - another good win probably, their best row of the season. Men's Senior B in the Open - failed to qualify for final by about a canvas - good gutsy performance. Men's Junior B - won their heat in style and finished 5th in final - another good performance from a crew who were Novice at the start of the season. Men's Novice Crew in the open - a very good third place for this young recently formed crew. Three wins and a third gave the Club the Port of Dartmouth Sesquicentennial (try saying that after a few pints!) Points Trophy for the most successful Club in the Open events.

HANTS & DORSET SEASON.

The Hants & Dorset season was a little disappointing - with wins at Men's Senior, Men's Junior Senior - each with a single win - and Men's Novice - three wins from two crews. We also won several cadet races and a mixed race and had a number of other crews go close - notably the Junior Ladies and our two Junior scullers - Mike Jenner and Ashley Maitland. We finished the season 3rd in the Men's Senior, Men's Junior Senior and Men's Junior Fours, runners-up for the Men's Novice Fours and 4th in the Ladies Junior Fours. The scullers were 4th and 5th in their Championship. It was good to see a Ladies Novice crew competing again and the Club averaged six fours crews, a pair and two scullers at most Hants & Dorset Regattas.

Jack Pike Sculls.

"On a calm, cold morning, the Jack Pike Sculls event was held successfully at Appley for the first time in nine years. Favourites for the event were Mickie Jenner and Ashley Maitland who have competed all season as Junior scullers, but Nick Pike has been seen on the water recently and had to be considered a threat despite carrying a twenty second handicap as a Senior sculler. Two other entrants who could not be ignored were Ben Ade and Matt Allsopp. The early lead was contended by Mickie and Matt with Ash, known to perform well on rougher water, not letting either of these two gain much of a lead. All too soon Nick was also away and closing the distance fast. Nearing the buoys, and with Nick overhauling Matt and Ben, Mickie's preparation for the event - going out over the course the previous day - gave him the advantage as he picked up a buoy quickly and turned while the others overshot the line. From then on the race became a procession with Mickie winning by four lengths from Ash. A Virus, or training scull race, was also held over an 800metre course from Appley Tower towards the pier and was contended by two cadets, Sam Billington and Ben Churchill. After a shaky start, Ben took the lead and held it to the finish. Prizes were presented by Jack Pike and refreshments provided by him and his wife June were enjoyed by all, including visitors from Carisbrooke Shipping who have sponsored the two new boats for the club.

NEW KIT.

A new supplier of racing kit is now in use - one piece at £35, Vests at £18 to £20, long sleeved plain white tops - £24. We expect to be placing an order for rowing tops, cost £50.00 within the next few weeks. See Nick Salter to view samples and order. The old cotton racing vests are also available at £8.50.

COACH DEVELOPMENT.

The Club hosted an ARA IA course over the weekends of 28th/29th September and 5th/6th October - for the Wessex Regional Rowing Council - with eight candidates taking parts from five different Clubs - Club members Mike Jenner and Becky York took part - and have qualified as Instructors to strengthen the Clubs coaching team. An RYA2 Launch users course has been held, with thanks to Ryde Inshore Rescue, with six Club Coaches gaining the award - Alan Evans, Becky Young, Chris Aiken, Tanzie Page, Pip Hersey and Steve Titmus. A St. John Ambulance "Life Saver Course is now underway - with Club members Steve Bull, Petra Saunders, Chris Jenkins and Josie Bull hoping to renew their first aid certificate and Pip Hersey, Chris Walker, Matt Bull and Ashley Maitland hoping to qualify for the first time.

BOAT MAINTENANCE.

Boat maintenance on the Coastal Boats has been allocated by Crew/Squad and crudely based on boat used and size of squad. Allocation is as follows -
