Ryde R.C. NEWSNews for Members and Friends of Ryde Rowing ClubSeptember 2003
With the rowing season looking to its close it is time to congratulate all those competitors for their efforts during the last few months. I think it would be fair to say that the Club has enjoyed a very successful season and this is a reflection of all the hard work put in by the rowers and their coaches during the “dark” months. A complete breakdown of results from the Regatta season thus far is attached to this newsletter. Once again our congratulations to all concerned.
I’m sure the members would wish to record their grateful thanks to Wightlink, without whose generous sponsorship our travel to mainland Regattas would be severely hampered. Further to that the Committee are pleased that they have agreed to continue this sponsorship for 2004.

Unfortunately there are still a few members who have not paid their Annual Subscription for 2003. These members will receive a reminder with this newsletter and it would be of great assistance if these could be paid promptly. If you receive a reminder and have already paid ………. “whoops”!......... our sincere apologies.
Finally may I on behalf of the Officers and Committee thank all our volunteers for their invaluable help over the past few months, once again congratulate crews & coaches for their sterling efforts, wish you all our members well and say we look forward to seeing you at the club soon.
Best regards, Peter Hewison. Honorary Secretary.
Ryde Rowing Club. ROWING Update. The Clubhouse, Appley Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 1ND. Tel: 01983 562127. AUGUST, 2003. NEWS FOR ROWING MEMBERS - FROM THE ROWING SUB COMMITTEE. HANTS & DORSET SEASON. The Club is having a pretty good season to date - especially and surprisingly in small boats (coxless pairs & single sculls). So far - this update was penned just after Bournemouth Regatta - we have had a Senior Fours win, two Mens Novice Fours wins and a Ladies Novice fours win - which leaves us with a good chance of the second representative slot for the Senior Fours at the South Coast Championships and a chance for both the Mens and Ladies Novice Hants & Dorset ARA Novice Championships. We have also had four wins in the Mens Junior coxless pairs - but unfortunately only two points - but we are still chasing this championship. We have also dominated the Men's Junior and Novice single sculls events with Mike Jenner leading in the Hants & Dorset Junior Championship with four points from his wins - and he is being chased by Ash Maitland - who has three points from his wins. With three regattas left one of these two must win this Championship for Ryde - and in the Novice Sculls we have seven wins - Mike Jenner, Ash Maitland, Steve Salter and Matt Allsopp all having won - and this Hants & Dorset Championship is already secure. With a second and sometimes a third Senior crew, a Junior Senior Crew, up to three Junior Crews and another Mens Novice four also competing as well as other Novice scullers the Club is also boating more crews than it has for several seasons. For the record Ashley Maitland became the first official Hants & Dorset ARA Junior Sculler following the introduction of Men’s Novice sculling this season. He required two Novice wins for promotion which he achieved at Shanklin and Woolston Regattas. Remaining fixtures - Saturday, 16th August. WORTHING Saturday, 23rd August. NEWPORT (Cowes) Saturday, 30th August. BTC.Sunday, 31st August. H&D Championship and South Coast Selection row-offs if required. Saturday, 13th September - South Coast Championships, Swanage, Dorset (H&D). RYDE REGATTA - 2003. sponsored by Ward House Financial Services. A very successful Ryde Regatta, both on and off the water was staged in May - with the Men's Senior crew winning the main event of the day to collect a new cup donated by Mike Merritt in memory of his late mother. The Isle of Wight Regatta weekend in 2004 will almost certainly be on 22nd/23rd May - with Ryde Regatta taking place on Sunday, 23rd. JACK PIKE SCULLS - 13th July. Eleven scullers from the Club competed in this years "Jack Pike" sculls. The race for a trophy donated by Jack Pike was raced over a shortened 1000m course from Puckpool Park to Appley Slipway - because of the conditions. The handicap event was won by the J16 sculler Ben Churchill - who has also won a couple of J16 sculling events at mainland Regattas during the season. ROWING FEES FOR 2003. There has been some confusion over the rowing fees this season - so to clarify -
Social rowers competing at a Regatta unless requested to do so by the rowing sub will have to pay an additional £8. Any late entry fee will be paid for by the crew. Individuals who "double-up" as opposed to being requested to or directed to will make a contribution of £2 each to each additional entry. Entry fees for mixed/charity races will be paid for by the competing crew. Rowing fees will be charged at al Regattas except Ryde. Special events like the South Coast Championships may have increased fees. The definition of a cadet for the purpose of rowing fees is roughly in line with the ARA J18 rules - you will pay the cadet rate if you are under 18 on the 1st September in the current school year unless in full time employment. BYE - BYE BECKY! Becky York who has been rowing with the Clubs Ladies Junior crew leaves the Club this month to take up a teaching post in Malaysia - the Club send her our best wishes - and we hope things go well for her. Coach Allocations Senior Men - Liz Van; J/S Men, Junior Sculler (Ash) + Adaptive - Steve Bull/Petra Saunders; Junior Men - "A" Nick Salter, "B" and "C" - Allan Evans & Mick Jenner, Novice Ladies Pip Hersey. The Novice A is training under the watchful eye of Ollie Bottrell and Clare Salter. EVENING LAUNCH SLOTS
COASTAL BOAT ALLOCATIONS
Applications for specific launch slots should be made to the Rowing Sub Committee. Round the Island Row. A crew from the Club is to make an attempt on the Round the Island Rowing record, weather permitting, their window of opportunity being from the 17th to the 21st August. They will also be raising funds for the Wessex Cancer Research fund and the Club - a sponsorship form is behind the Bar at the Clubhouse. CLUB MARK. Following the Clubs recognition by the Amateur Rowing Association as a "Go-Row" Club accredited to run the National Junior Rowing Programme our next challenge is "Clubmark" a nationally recognized standard set by Sport England for Clubs that provide a safe, effective and child friendly environment for children and young people. The Club is now actively working towards achieving this standard. For information on the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association check out their web site. Steve Bull - for the Rowing Sub Committee.
