Racing News
The Club have had another good coastal season with wins at Men's and Ladies Novice Fours, in the
Veteran Fours and the Men's Senior Sculls - as well as dominating the J16 Fours races where they
won all but one of the races held. Their four wins in the Men's Novice status gave the Club a share in
the Hants & Dorset ARA Men's Novice Championships and Senior Sculler - Ian Hayden's four wins
secured him his first Men's Hants & Dorset ARA Senior Sculling Championship to go alongside his
2
GB Masters Gold Medal won earlier in the season. As well as the two Hants & Dorset Championships
mentioned the Club finished as runners-up for the Veteran Fours and in 3rd place for the Men's
Coastal Junior Fours Championship. The eleven Hants & Dorset Championship Points won made
them the 8th ranked Hants & Dorset ARA Club, the highest placed of any of the three Island Clubs. A
surprise win at Men’s Junior Fours for one of the winning Novice Crew means that – Charlie Gedling,
Harvey Kirkby and Jo and Charlie Norman will be Junior Seniors next season – while Max Reeve,
Andreas Hicks, Sam Corney and Dale Buckett will race at Coastal Junior allowing us to mount a
challenge for both these Championships. Bryony Reeves two wins in Novice Ladies composite crews
promotes her to Coastal Junior Status. The Club also had a number of successes in the pre-season
head races – notably overall and Senior Fours winners at the Southampton Coastal HORR.
The Clubs Veteran squad – now called “masters” were busy in the early part of the season competing
at the GB Masters at Nottingham where Ian Hayden took the Gold Medal in the Masters “B” single
sculls event and Mick Jenner took a silver in the Masters “C” single sculls – with these two then
combining in a coxless quad with Russell Page and Simon Saunders where they finished in third
place. The squad also competed at the Henley Masters Regatta.
The Club competed in the 55th South Coast Rowing Championships which included the 6th South
Coast Junior Regatta, held at the 2012 Olympic Regatta venue at Eton, Dorney – where we won the
Boys J14 Double Sculls and were 2nd – by less than a foot – in the J16 Boys Coxed Quad. The Club
also played a leading role in the staging of this event – which was hosted by our own Association –
the Hants & Dorset ARA – providing the pontoon marshalling team, the merchandise sales team and
race officials – as well as sponsoring an event.
Over the years Ryde Rowing Club has had an excellent record of members of their Junior Squad
being selected for the Wessex Region Team – for the GB Junior Inter Regional Regatta - and this
years was no exception with no less than eight Ryde Club members – a record for any Island Rowing
Club - being selected for the Regional team following extensive mainland trials that have taken place
over the last few months. Ryde’s successful J15 Boys Coxed Quad, of Sam Corney, Andras Hicks,
Dale Buckett and Max Reeve, who were the 2010 South Coast Champions raced as a crew and
achieved the best result of any of the Island representatives finishing 2nd in the petite final. Ryde’s
Harvey Kirkby and Charlie Norman – with Ryde Coxswain – Ed Newnham were selected to race in a
composite J14 Coxed Quad with two juniors from Shanklin – but could only finish 4th in the petite
final where Harvey aggravated an injury suffered in training the previous week – which required
medical attention after the race and arguably effected their performance. Ryde’s Jo Norman was
selected for the Boys J16 Coxed Quad in a composite crew with representatives from Shanklin,
Southampton and Itchen – and they finished 6th in the petite final. The contribution made by the
selected Juniors from Ryde helped the Wessex Region – which is the smallest in the country to
achieve a reasonable result and is a clear indication of the advance in Junior Rowing on the Island in
recent years.
The Club had hoped to have two masters’ scullers competing in the 31 mile Boston Marathon –
unfortunately this was cancelled just two days before it was due to take place because of the
excessive weed in the river. This was doubly unfortunate because the event was being used as a
fund-raiser for the Clubs nominated charity - Naomi House Children’s Hospice (Wessex
Children's Hospice Trust). Should you still wish to make a donation – in spite of the cancelled race
– you can do through the Club “Just giving” page at - http://www.justgiving.com/Ryde-Rowing-Club0

Ryde Regatta

A successful Ryde Regatta was staged on Saturday, 4th June, with twelve Clubs in attendance -
including all three Island Rowing Clubs. A near record entry of 130 crews and scullers raced in coxed
fours, coxless pairs, coxless double sculls and single sculls over the 1920m Regatta course off
Appley beach - racing towards the pier where they completed a racing turn before racing back to the
start. A packed program of twenty races - including one re-row after a dead heat in the Men's Senior
Fours, was crammed into the four and a half hours of available water. Conditions were difficult but it
3
was always rowable - a true Coastal Regatta - with one or two minor incidents that were well handled
by the Ryde Inshore Rescue boat on duty supported by the Ryde Club's Safety boat - which also
provided safety cover at Shanklin Regatta on the Sunday - which was disrupted and curtailed by the
weather. Micky Ward from the Regatta's main sponsors - Ward House Financial Services - presented
the Trophies and individual prizes to the winning crews - which included a Shanklin/Ryde composite
Novice Ladies Crew - and a second place for the Ryde Men's Novice A crew.

Isle of Wight Rowing Forum and “Explore Rowing”

During August, following the delayed delivery of the boat package the three Island Rowing Clubs,
acting together as the Isle of Wight Rowing Forum (IWRF) were finally able to launch their "Explore
Rowing" project. This is British Rowing's innovative new "flag- ship" project aimed at promoting
rowing in the local community. The IWRF is very grateful for all the support they received during the
application process. As well as British Rowing and Sport England, the IW Council Sports Unit helped
with project advice and coordination of financial grants – enabling the IWRF to secure one of only fifty
packages being made available to rowing clubs across the country. The new funding allowed the
IWRF to purchase a range of new and specially designed boats, perfect for beginners and
experienced rowers alike which will be owned jointly by the three rowing clubs. British Rowing’s
scheme will also help the clubs with the delivery of a new learn to row scheme as well as a variety of
new activities which will range from social rowing events to personal challenges. The project and the
new boats were launched at a ceremony held at the Ryde Clubhouse on Sunday, 14th August with
Louise Attrill, MBE, Island Oarsman and Olympic gold medallist performing the ceremony. If you
would like a boat named after you, your company or an individual there are sponsorship opportunities
for all the IWRF boats – if you would like details of this opportunity please contact Steve Bull on
019863 566481 – email – stephencbull@googlemail.com

The IWRF also staged a 2nd Junior Regatta at Newport in May - the format of the event was to
encourage rowers from each club to compete alongside each other, rather than in their regular crews.
Twenty three youngsters registered to compete, and crews were drawn by senior club members. The
result was complete novices being able to join their more experienced counterparts in a competitive,
but fun based event. Categories available were mixed quadruple sculls, mixed double sculls, single
sculls and virus training sculls. The hope is that this will become at least an annual event.

New Equipment.

The Club has been able to improve its land training equipment during the year – with a significant
upgrade to its “fleet” of Ergos and some new and much safer weight training equipment. Four new
sets of lightweights sculls have been purchased and the Club are “looking after” three of the Explore
Rowing Boats – a Coastal double and two coastal single sculls on behalf of the IWRF – although all
the Explore Rowing boats are available for Club use. The most significant addition to the Clubs fleet
is a second hand coxless quad – which will allow the Club to compete more effectively at river events
– especially in the “Masters” Regatta’s. The purchase of this boat to be named “Johnnie Walker”
would not have been possible without the support of Club sponsor Carisbrooke Shipping and Club
Vice President Ian Walker and his family. Unfortunately we not yet been able to arrange a date for
the naming ceremony for this boat – but hope to do so in the near future.

Clubhouse and Bar

After a quick glance at the Club accounts you will quickly appreciate that one of our major sources of
income, raising significantly more than fund raising or subscriptions, is the Club Bar – and with the
decline in use of the facility by club members – the major contributor to the bar profit is the use of the
Clubhouse for a range of different functions. Without this area of income the Club would have to
substantially increase its rates of subscription and fees and curtail some of its activities. It is therefore
critical for the Clubs future that we maintain this activity – and the biggest potential threat to this is
4
finding enough volunteer bar staff to cover functions (and general club openings). So, while offering
the Clubs thanks to all those who do volunteer to do a bar duty – we would make an appeal to all
members to help the club in this area by volunteering to do an occasional bar duty. Training and
instructions will be given if needed. If you can help – even if it’s just once or twice a year – please
contact Josie Bull on 01983 566481 – email – josiembull@googlemail.com

Members can hire the Clubhouse for functions – subject to certain restrictions and conditions (for
example we don’t do 18th Birthday Parties) – at a very reasonable cost – guideline costs for members
are - 6.30 to midnight - £60 both bars - £50 for front bar only – up to 11.00pm. Later - £10 an hour.
Day-time – guide – (no bar) – am or pm - £30 to £40. All day - £60. All day & evening (with bar) -
£150. Corkage - £4 a bottle. (not for toasts). There is a £100 returnable deposit charged – against
damage or loss. The Clubhouse can be made available during the day for meetings and
presentations – and has some audio visual equipment that can be made available at a small
additional charge (PC projector, TV, screen etc...). The Club cannot provide catering – and has
limited catering facilities – but we can recommend outside caterers we are used to coping with the
Clubs limited facilities. To enquire about booking the clubhouse contact the Bar manager – Steph
Hickman – on 613077 or steph.hickman1944@gmail.com

Partly in order to maintain and hopefully increase the number of functions the club accommodates we
have, during the past year, upgraded the furniture in the back bar – moving the best from their into
the main lounge and disposing of some of the older and damaged pieces.
