A
slightly smaller team than usual from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club
competed at Poole Regatta on Saturday but still managed to return to the Island
with two wins and a number of second and third places.
The Men's Coastal Junior Four
of Tim Wiggins, Callum Lowe, Francis Moore, Tom Clark and Cox Bryony Reeve
continued their good start to the season winning the third Championship race in
a row against strengthening opposition.
Tom Clark then went on to
compete in the Men's Novice Sculls which he won convincingly to take the first
step towards Coastal Junior status. Callum Lowe also competed in this event, for
the first time, finishing in an impressive 4th place in the final. Tom and
Callum then got together to compete in the Double Sculls, the only Novice Crew
in the race, where they finished 2nd less than a length behind the much more
experienced Southsea Crew.
The Men's Senior Four of Stu
Johnson, Ben Ade, Mike Jenner, Ian Hayden and cox Bryony Reeve, a changed crew
from the previous week, did well to reach the final where they finished in third
place. Ben and Ian then competed in the Senior Pairs finishing 2nd and in the
Junior Sculls where Ian finished 2nd and Ben 3rd.
Meanwhile Mike competed in the
Men's Senior Sculls finishing 2nd behind GB Junior International James Foad of
Itchen.
This weekend the Club will
compete at Newport Regatta on Saturday and the re-scheduled Shanklin Regatta on
the Sunday with the Club providing an element of Safety cover at both events.
Negotiations continue with the IW Council with regards to re-scheduling the
abandoned Ryde Regatta on Saturday, 16th August.
