Poole Regatta, Saturday, 21st May, 2011.
Two Ryde Crews in Dead Heat to win J16 Event.
Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, IW Ferries, competed in the first
Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta on Saturday (21st May) where their two
J16 Crews were involved in the closet race of the day. The Ryde “A” crew of -
Andreas Hicks, Dale Buckett, Sam Corney, Max Reeve and Ed Newnham coxing and the
“B” crew of Charlie Gedling, Charlie Norman, Joe Norman, Harvey Kirkby with
Bryony Reeve coxing quickly pulled away from the other crews involved in the
race to establish a comfortable lead – but could not break away from each other
– with less than half a length separating the two crews throughout the race. At
the finish the judges were unable to separate them and a dead heat was declared
and with the re-row abandoned due to regatta time constraints the two Ryde crews
share the honours.
These two crews also competed in the Men's Novice Fours event where the “A” crew
performed particularly well to finish 2nd in their heat and claim a place in the
final where, after a good start, they dropped back to finish in 6th place. The
“B” crew failed to make the final on this occasion – in an event where both
crews are racing against much older and larger opposition.
Sam Corney also competed in the Boys J16 Single Sculls event where he was in
contention throughout the race but just missed out to finish in 2nd place.
A young ladies Novice crew of Leanne Mitchell, Bryony Reeve, Sophie Brown and
Gemma Smith also competed producing a solid performance to finish 4th in their
heat and the Club also had two Senior Scullers racing – Ian Hayden and Mike
Jenner, who both comfortably got through their heats and finished 2nd and 3rd in
the final.
