Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club were the soul Island representatives at Poole Regatta on Saturday 9th, June and, on a very busy weekend for the Club, at the Wessex Region Junior Regatta held at Bryanston School on the 10th June.

At Poole Regatta on the Saturday, Ryde's Senior Sculler, Matt Allsopp finally achieved his ambition of beating fellow club member and reigning Hants & Dorset Senior Champion Nick Pike in a very close race, with just half a length between them, with Ryde's third Senior Sculler - Mike Jenner finishing in third.

Mike and Matt then joined Ian Hayden and Ben Ade, with Cox Bryony Reeve to compete in the Men’s Senior Fours where, having won their heat, they came from behind, in the twice round final to beat rivals BTC by half a length and draw level with them in the Championship race.

The men’s Junior Four of Robin Kersey, Allan Evans, James Eklund and Tom Clark with Bryony Reeve coxing once again, a makeshift crew disrupted by the IW Festival and exams, found the going difficult in their final finishing in 5th place.

Robin and Tom then doubled-up to race in the Junior Pair where they finished in 3rd place.

Tom Clark also competed in the Double sculls with Nick Pike but unfortunately they were disqualified for taking the wrong buoy while leading the race.

A similar fate befell Ian Hayden in the Junior Sculls, where he was disqualified in the heat for failing to complete the course although there was some suspicion that this was tactical with a Senior Fours final looming. Similarly, Ryde’s other Junior Sculler, Ben Ade was off the pace in the final finishing in 4th place but probably had one eye on the Senior Fours Final as well.

In the Novice Sculls both the Ryde Scullers performed well Ian Hayden finishing in second place in the final with Tom Clark close behind in third. James Eklund, also sculled well to finish 3rd in the J16 Sculls final.
