Ryde Rowing Club Regatta, Saturday, 16th August, 2008.
The host Club Ryde lead the way with four wins, the most important coming in the Men's Senior Fours where the Ryde A Crew of Adam Dracott, Ben Ade, Matt Allsopp, Ian Hayden and cox Bryony Reeve had to come from two lengths down at the turn to row through Itchen to win and claim an all important third Championship point that guarantees them the runners-up slot in the Hants & Dorset Championship and all but guarantees them selection to represent the Association at the South Coast Rowing Championships in Plymouth in September and a chance to defend their South Coast Title. The Senior B Crew of Sam Cocker, Dave Squibb, Jamie Lawson and James Eklund with Tom Clark coxng unfortunately missed their start and although they raced after the other crews had no hope of catching them. The "C" Crew of Mike Jenner, Ollie Botrell, Nick Pike and James Batchelor with Elena Gaskin coxing finished in 5th place.
There was a good performance from a rare appearance of a Ryde Ladies Senior Crew consisting of Rachael Brimstone, Sophie Draper, Hayley Edwards and with Elena Gaskin coxing who finished in 3rd place. Another important Ryde victory came in the Men's Senior Pairs where the A Crew of Ian Hayden and Matt Allsopp won a very close race to keep alive their hopes of this Hants & Dorset Championship although they will have to win the last Regatta of the season on Saturday to force a row-off. The Senior B Crew of Mike Jenner and Ollie Bottrell were also in contention in this race when they were disqualified for an infringement at the turn and the C Crew of Dave Squibb and Sam Cocker finished well down the field. A fourth victory for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club came in the Double Sculls event where the crew of Ollie Bottrell and Nick Pike were comfortable winners. The trio of Ryde Senior Scullers - Nick Pike, Mike Jenner and Matt Allsopp will have been disappointed with their results in an event they have often dominated finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. The Ryde Clubs Junior Pair of James Eklund and Jamie Lawson where a little of the pace finishing in 4th place in their final. Junior Scull Ian Hayden finished 3rd in race. This good all round performance from the Ryde Crews gave put them in 2nd place for the aggregate shield. Considering this was a rescheduled event the Regatta was well supported with twelve Clubs entering crews including nine from the mainland and the Ryde Club are grateful for the support they received from the local community, the Isle of Wight and Ryde Town Councils, Ryde Inshore Rescue and others without whom the Regatta could not have been staged. Ryde
Rowing Club were finally able to stage their Annual Regatta on Saturday
(16th August) following the abandonment of the event in May after just one
race because of the deteriorating conditions. This time, in spite of the
forecast, the conditions were nearly perfect for Coastal rowing - and the
Regatta proved to be very successful for the Island with seven of the
fifteen events, nearly half, being won between the three Island Clubs.
The
Ryde Men's Coastal Junior Crew of Alan Evans, Callum Lowe, Francis Moore and
Tom Clark, with Bryony Reeve once again in the coxswains seat, who are
already Hants & Dorset Champions and guaranteed selection to represent the
Association, won again with comparative ease - their 9th win of the season -
a Club record in this event. Ryde's Junior B Crew finished in 5th place.
