Ryde Rowing Club Regatta, Sunday, 5th June, 2005 – Appley Beach.

Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink I.W. Ferries, experienced some unexpected success over the Isle of Wight Regatta weekend at Shanklin Regatta on Saturday, 4th June and Ryde on Sunday, 5th June.

On the Saturday at Shanklin the difficult conditions forced the cancellation of most of the small boats events where the Club had high hopes of victory in the Men’s Junior and Senior Single sculls. However the fours races were unaffected and the Ryde crews performed above expectations with wins for their Junior Senior Four of Mike Palin, Matt Bull, Chris Walker and Lee Bennett, coxed by Jamie Lawson and for their Men’s Junior Four of Sam Cocker, Dave Squibb, Ben Churchill and Matt Evans with Claire Salter Coxing. The Men’s Senior Four of  Ben Ade, Matt Allsopp, Mike Jenner and Nick Pike, coxed by Tom Clark finished in 2nd place behind a strong Christchurch Crew to confirm that they will be challenging for honours this season. The Men’s Novice Crew of Ian Dyer, James Ekland, Tom Clark and Jamie Lawson, with Clare Salter coxing finished 3rd in their heat to qualify for the final where they finished in a creditable 6th place against much older and stronger opposition. The Ladies Novice B Crew also qualified for their final – the crew of Rachael Whitmarsh, Amiee Dibbens, Hayley Edwards, Rachael Middle and cox Tom Clark finishing in 2nd place – an exceptionally good performance in their first competitive event. The Ladies A Crew of Kim Salter, Rachael Brimstone, Sophie Draper and Sarah Lamb, coxed by Claire Salter just missed out on the final after a gutsy performance. The overall performance of these Ryde Crews gave the Ryde Club a share in Aggregate Trophy along with Southsea Rowing Club.

Conditions had improved for the Ryde Clubs home Regatta on the Sunday, staged over a 1920m course off Appley Beach near their Clubhouse. An entry of 97 crews from 11 different Clubs contested sixteen different events with a race every 15 minutes. Again the Ryde crews performed well with another win for their Men’s Junior Four, another second place for the Senior Four and a third place for the Junior Senior Crew – who appeared to be suffering from the celebrations after their unexpected win on the Saturday. The Men’s and the two Ladies Novice crews reached their finals – the men repeating Saturday’s performance to finish 6th and the Ladies  4th and 7th respectively. Two from each of the Ladies Novice crews then went on to compete in the Ladies Junior Fours finishing in 2nd place. With the calmer conditions allowing the small boat races to take place the Club achieved further success with its Single Scullers – Nick Pike in the Senior Sculls winning in style to kick-off his campaign to retain the Hants & Dorset Championship and Junior Sculler – Stephen Salter also winning convincingly. Mike Jenner and Matt Allsopp also competed in the Senior Sculls producing encouraging performances as did Ben Churchill and Ben Ade in the Novice Sculls and the Senior Pair of Stephen Salter and Ollie Bottrell. On this occasion the Club had achieved good enough results to win the aggregate shield outright.

Following the last race - Micky Ward, representing the Regatta’s main sponsor Ward House Financial Services, presented the Trophies and individual prizes to the winning crews and scullers. This was preceded by Regatta Secretary, Steve Bull’s words of thanks to him and to the Regattas event sponsors and acknowledgment of the support given by the IW Council, St John Ambulance, Ryde Inshore Rescue, Tony Richardson and his team of helpers from the Club. He also praised the cooperation of the crews and competing Clubs, which had allowed the Regatta to finish on time and with no major incidents.
