Southampton Coastal Head of the River Race, Sunday, 17th April, 2011.
Ryde Rowing Club had two crews competing in the traditional Hants & Dorset ARA
season curtain raiser – the Southampton Coastal Fours Head of the River Race on
Sunday (17th April) which is a time trial, staged in two divisions, over a
winding four and a half mile course on the River Itchen.
The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club has produced some good performances in this
event over the years their Senior Men’s crews taking the head pennant on a
number of occasions – but while they had a crew with plenty of experience afloat
which they knew would be competitive – the crew of Stu Johnson, Mick Jenner, Ban
Ade and Ian Hayden with Ed Newnham coxing, were a little surprised to finish
first in the Senior Men’s section – with the fastest time of the day – 16
minutes 55 seconds to take the Head Pennant once again – although it was by the
narrowest of margins – just one second separating them from the pre-race
favourites from Coalporters. The Club were particularly pleased with the
performance of their coxswain Ed Newnham who is in his first season and steered
exceptionally well over the difficult course.
The Ryde Club should also had two young Men’s Novice Crews entered but injuries
forced them to withdraw one and an amalgamated crew of Dale Buckett, Andreas
Hicks, Charlie Gedling, Max Reeve with Katie Corney coxing did well, against
older and larger opposition and a strong field to finish 12 in their section in
a time of 19 minutes 33 seconds – and once again there was a good performance by
young Coxswain Katie Corney, also in her first full season as a Club Cox.
