SOUTHAMPTON EIGHTS AND SMALL BOATS HEAD, SUNDAY, 20th MARCH.
Ryde Rowing Club took a team of twenty to the Southampton Eights and Small boats
Head of the River on Sunday (20th March) including fourteen members of their
Junior Squad, as part of their preparation for the new season. The race is a
time trial, in two divisions, over a challenging four and a half mile course on
the River Itchen – the longest race many of the Juniors have done so far.
In the first division the Wightlink sponsored Club had a men’s open senior
coxless quad of Russell Page, Simon Saunders, Mike Jenner and Ian Hayden who
comfortably won their section with a time of 16 minutes 08 seconds.
They also had a Men’s Senior Coastal pair competing of Ben Ade and Stuart
Johnson who finished in 19 minutes 27second, in 4th place in the section in a
strong field.
The junior boys competed in the Men’s Coastal Fours section – the “A” Crew of –
Charlie and Joe Norman, Charlie Gedling and Harvey Kirkby with Ed Newnham coxing
finishing in 5th place in a time of 18 minutes 39 seconds, with the “B” Crew of
Sam Corney, Andreas Hicks, Dale Buckett and Max Reeve finishing in 9th place in
a time of 20 minutes 08 seconds in another strong field.
In the 2nd division the Clubs Men’s Intermediate 3 double scull of Ben Ade and
Stuart Johnson finished in a time of 18 minutes 33 seconds – and the Men’s
Veteran Double of Mike Jenner and Russell Page finished just five seconds slower
in 18 minutes 38 seconds – both crews winning their respective sections – and
Ian Hayden competing in the Men’s Coastal Senior Sculls was also a convincing
winner completing the course in a time of 19 minutes 49 seconds.
There was a further section win for the Boys J16 Coxed Quad of Sam Corney, Joe
Norman, Charlie Gedling and Dale Buckett who completed the course in a time of
20 minutes 33 seconds and a good performance from the Women's novice crew of of
Leanne Mitchell, Gemma Smith, Sophie Brown and Bryony Reeve with Cox Katie
Corney who finished 8th in their section.
