Press Release, Ryde R. C. South Coast Rowing Championships, Plymouth, Saturday, 13th September, 2008.

RYDE ROWING CLUB. SOUTH COAST JUNIOR MENS CHAMPIONS.

Ryde Rowing Clubs Coastal Junior Four of Callum Lowe, Tim Wiggins, Francis Moore and Tom Clark with Bryony Reeve coxing added the South Coast Championship Title to their Hants and Dorset Championship on Saturday (13th September) in Plymouth, winning in a very close race against their Association rivals Southampon Coalporters. These two crews had been selected to represent their Rowing Associoation against the Champions and runners-up from the Coast ARA which covers Sussex and Kent and from the West of England ARA which covers Devon and Corwall - but none of these crews came close to threatening the domination of the two Hants & Dorset Crews in the race - all the more surprising as these crews had to switch to the less familer River Boats for this Regatta. The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Crew got off to its usual fast start and took an early lead, all be it only by about half a length, but the Coalporters crew fought back and at the half way mark held a slight lead. But the Ryde responded well rowing through Coalporters as the finish line approached to win by an official margin of half a canvas to take the South Coast title to complete an outstanding season for this young crew, three of whom were Novice Oarsman at the start of the year.

However there was bittter disappointment from Ryde's other selected representative crew, the Mens Senior Four of Mike Jenner, Adam Dracott, Matt Allsopp and Ian Hayden, with Bryony Reeve coxing once again, who were defemding the title won last year. The crew had a poor start from which they never recovered eventually finishing in 4th place.

Ryde's other crews, entered in the open and invitation events, staged for those not selected to represent their Associations performed well - the Mens Senior Crew of Stu Johnson, Nick Christopher, Ollie Bottrell and Ben Ade with Elena Gasin coxing finished 3rd in their final while the Senior Ladies Crew of Anna Bateman, Emiley Page, Sophie Draper and Rachael Brimstone, with Elena once again in the Coxswains seat were just pipped on the line and pushed back into 4th place in their final - having held been in 3rd place for most of the race.

The Championship Regatta concludes another succesful season for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club in which they have won the Mens Coastal Junior Fours and Mens Senior Pairs Hants & Dorset Championships and were runners-up in the Mens Senior, Junior and Novice Coastal Sculls in addition to their South Coast Championship win.
