SOUTHSEA REGATTA.  9th JULY, 2005.

Ryde Sculler Nick Pike took another significant step towards retaining his   Hants & Dorset ARA Senior Sculls Championship on Saturday with another fine win at Southsea Regatta, which was all the more impressive with the stronger field as the two Coastal Rowing Associations meet at this event for the only   time before the South Coast Championships in September. The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club also showed a strength in depth in Senior Sculling with two other scullers - Mike Jenner and Matt Allsopp reaching the final and finishing 4th and 6th respectively.

A second win for the Club came in the Novice Ladies Fours, where the Ryde A  Crew of  Kim Salter, Chloe Attrill, Sophie Draper and Rachael Brimstone, coxed by Jasmine Burr-Hersey completed their anticipated second win in fine style to gain promotion to Coastal Junior status. A good performance from the Novice Ladies B Crew, Crew of  Rachael Middle, Amy Dibben, Hayley   Edwards and Rachael Whitmarsh who finished 3rd gives the Club a good chance of taking this Hants & Dorset Championship as well.

The Men's Senior Four of Nick Pike, Mike Jenner Ian Hayden and Matt Allsopp,
coxed by Tom Clark finished a disappointing 4th in their final having won their heat with comparative ease and the result for the Junior Senior Four of  Mike Palin, Matt Bull, Chris Walker, Lee Bennett, with Jamie Lawson coxing, who finished 5th in their final was also a slight disappointment.

The Men's Junior Four of  Ben Churchill, Matt Evans, Dave Squibb and Sam Cocker, coxed by Jodie Cocker, came through their heat with comparative ease but faced tougher opposition in the final where they finished in third place missing out on the Hants & Dorset Championship Point by just half a canvas.

Ian Dyer, James Eklund, Tom Clark, Jamie Lawson and Cox Jodie Cocker raced in the Men's Novice four and continue to show improvement finishing  5th in their heat just failing to make the final.  Con & Christy Sullivan were forced to race above their status - in the Men's Senior Pairs - because they were a late entry and the Junior Pairs event
was full - but they acquitted themselves well and it will be interesting to see what they can do racing in their correct status at future Regattas.

Christy also competed in the Novice Sculls - making his debut in this event and showing promise for the future. Ian Hayden and Mike Jenner raced in the double scull but could not repeat their victory of a few weeks ago - finishing 5th in the final. Jodie Cocker and Chole Attrill completed the largest Ryde team entered so far this season competing in the Ladies Junior Pairs for the first time and also showed promise for the future.

This weekend a much smaller Ryde team - just Nick Pike in the Open Coastal sculls and the winning Novice Ladies Crew competing this time in the J15 Girls Coxed Quad, travel to the GB National Rowing Championships at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham.
