Ryde
Rowing Club were the sole Island Representatives at Swanage Regatta on Saturday
(4th July) returning to the Island with Four Trophies.
The Men's Senior Four of Russell Page, MIke Jenner, Nick Pike and Ian Hayden
with Bryony Reeve coxing rowed well within themselves in their heat to
comfortably qualify for the final, which was just as well as they were all
doubling up in smaller boat before their final which was the last race of a long
day - and where reigning Hants & Dorset Champions BTC were favourites to win.
However the Ryde crew surprised them staying with them to the turn and then
pulling away on the return leg to win by two clear lengths.
Pride of place however must go to Russel Page and Ian Hayden in the Men's Senior
Pair who scored an emphatic victory - the Clubs 6th of the season to ensure they
retain the Hants & Dorset ARA Senior Pairs Championship.
Ryde have also dominated the Men's Senior Sculls events this season so far - and
this Regatta was no exception with Nick Pike getting past Mike Jenner in the
final stages to claim his 3rd point of the season and narrow the gap between him
and Mike to just one point. Ryde other Senior Sculler, Ian Hayden, finished in
5th place.
There was a welcome return to form for Junior Sculler Tom Clark, who
performances in the last few Regatta's have been disappointing - but he had no
problems on Saturday, winning comfortably to draw level with the Lymington
Sculler in the chase for this Championship. He was very nearly joined in the
final by Ryde Sculler Callum Lowe - who was in a qualifying position when he
misread the finish line, stopping to early, and allowing another sculler to pass
him.
In the Men's Novice Sculls - Stu Johnson produced one of his best performances
to date, finishing 3rd in his heat and qualifying for the final where he
finished 4th.
The improving Men's Novice Four of Donat Debrecan, Curtis Lowe, James Cleary and
John Gedling, with Dale Buckett coxing won their heat but found the pace in the
final of this very competitive event a little difficult to handle finishing in
4th place. The Ladies Novice Four of Leona Fisk, Vici Hewlett, Becca Coleman and
Emiley Page with Max Reeve Coxing who have not been able to race much so far
this season showed considerable spirit but failed to make the final.
The Club also competed in the mixed fours event - the crew of Vici Hewlett,
Becca Coleman, James Cleary and Curtis Lowe with Max Reeve in the coxswains seat
again finishing in 4th place.
The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club face a busy weekend (11th/12th) July, with
most of their Seniors competing in the Henley Veterans Regatta on the Friday and
Saturday, the Juniors competing at the Coalporters Junior Regatta on the Sunday
- as well as the Club competing at Southsea Regatta on the Saturday.
