WOOLSTON REGATTA, Saturday, 16th June, 2007. Avery busy June continued for Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club with their third "double header" in a row with the Club competing at Woolston Regatta on Saturday, 16th June - and for the first time - at the National Veterans Regatta, at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham, on Sunday, the 17th June. The Ryde Club were once again the only Island representatives at Woolston Regatta, the highlight for the Club coming once again in the Men's Senior Sculls with another convincing win from reigning Hants & Dorset ARA Champion Nick Pike to take his points haul to five, well on his way to retaining the title for a fourth year. Mike Jenner had the misfortune to have an outside draw in the very rough conditions which had an impact on his performance as he finished in 4th place in the same event. The Men's Senior Four of Ben Ade, Mike Jenner, Nick Pike and Ian Hayden with Bryony Reeve coxing also had the misfortune to get an outside draw and had to battle back from fourth place and around five lengths behind the leaders at the turn to eventually closed to within two lengths of the winners BTC to claim second place. The lack of training continues to effect the performance of the Men's Junior Crew of Callum Lowe, James Eklund, Tom Clark and Jamie Lawson, with Ollie Gove coxing who finished in 5th place in their final. Tom Clark then sculled particularly well in the Men's Novice Sculls to finish in 3rd place but the rough conditions do not suit Ian Hayden who finished in 5th place in this event and suffered a similar fate in the Men's Junior Sculls final - where the other Ryde Sculler, Ben Ade, had to withdraw through illness. |
